    twisted leader connection?

    Hey guys,
I''ve started dabbling in winding up my own twisted leader but, just wondering what connection do you use to the braid? Do you just put the braid loop though the mono loop and pull the leader through or, do you something different ie, multiple loops?

My other question is regarding the terminal end. Anyone that uses a twisted leader do you always use snaps? Ur just tye a loop knot with the twisted strands?

    Any help appreciated here

    Re: twisted leader connection?

    Hi turley,
I'm expecting this to be hard to explain a knot written and not showing it first hand but here I go.This knot is on the inside of the packet of the Knotted Dogs and is called the Bionic Bind,Some people say it's a Catspaw but it isn't and it is a different knot altogether.I'm right handed and hope you are too.I'll try to explain it in a way to make it as easy as possible for you to do,Here goes.

#1 In a sitting position have your reel with double pulled out so you have the single strand available to pull the knot tight on your left hand side,Have the twisted leader on your right hand side.

#2 Put the end of the double through the top loop of the leader and slide the leader up about 8 inches,Now cross your left foot on to your right knee.

#3 Place the loop (Bottom) of the double over ya big toe on ya left foot,Now pull the main line with ya left hand above the biminni or plat to ensure the strands of the double are at even lengths,While tight pinch the leader and two double strands together with ya right hand with the leader laying towards you and and off to the right of your body.

#4 Let go of the single main in ya left hand and transfer the leader and double being pinched by your right to your left hand.

#5 Take the end of the leader (Where you would put the lure/snap) with your free right hand and pass it under the leg of the double closest to you and then up between the two and over the outside leg,(Pull the entire leader through on every sequence but keep some preassure on the pinch in ya left till the end)Then under the outside leg up through the middle and over the leg closest to you,Continue under the closest leg up through the middle over the outside,Back under the outside up through the middle,Over the closest leg to you back under and up through the middle,Over the outside back under and up through the middle,And again,Over the closest back under it and through the middle. You should see a very clear pattern working from your left hand down towards your toe.

#6 Pull tight with the single main line in ya left and the twisted leader in ya right,Pull it up slowly and as it starts to form use salive to lubrcate the knot.Do not tighten this knot by pulling both legs of the double as it will end up uneven.

It is recommended four to six cycles be used when tying this knot.Myself I've been doing four and have had no failures,This also keeps it as small and compact as possible.

This will slide through your guides like no other connection as it has no tags,And as the braid wraps the mono and not the mono the braid (As in the Braid Leader/Ducknose and Opposed Uni knots) this knot is super slick,On casting you won't even know it's there.

I use snaps for quick lure changes,If it is a straight two strand twisted leader I tie the snap on with a Uni or Nail knot.If you quad the last foot of the Twisted Leader it creates a small loop at the bottom onto which you place a snap.Or if ya real confident in a particular lure you can put it on before you start the quad back up the leader finishing with a Nail or Uni knot.

I've read this and it makes sence to me,But I reckon you should sit down and get someone to read it to you and you follow the instructions at your pace. After doing it once you should have a good idea on how to do it.

turley this is starting to make my head hurt .Let me know how you go.

Hope I've been able to help. Regards hardb8

Try this one for a braid to mono/flouro connection. It's not bad at all. They call it 'slim beauty'. Weird name, but quite cool.

    Re: twisted leader connection?

Thanks hardb8! I had a look around the net and didn't take me long to find the knot for harro's knotted dog leaders. looks good though I gotta practice it a bit so it doesn't form on the "lumps"of the leader. Good description you wrote anyway and I got most of it Kenny I've tried the slim beauty with single strand leader before but, never been 100% confident in it and, the double overhand knot at the start is still alot bulkier than a twisted leader. I think I am gonna try using some snaps... just gotta find some that I trust. I tried some expensive crosslock snaps from the mart we don't mention but, didn't take too long and it straighted and I lost my lure without catching a fist

    Re: twisted leader connection?

turley .... the tying procedure for the slim beauty in that link I gave doesn't begin with a double overhand knot. But instead, it begins with a real figure of eight knot. I've seen other procedures that start from a double overhand....but I think I'd rather go for the figure of eight.

    turley,
Try the Halco crosslocks size #3. Rated at 50lb,Small and strong,They make bigger one's if ya think you'll need em.Highly recommended.

    Re: twisted leader connection?

When it comes to snaps, I recommend buying overkill strength. I have found it quite easy to turn a 110lb clip almost inside out on 30lb braid, (usually on a snag ) dont have a problem with 160lb.
    Just my opinion
