    Braid or Mono for baitcasters?

    Greetings Ausfishos,

I have a Shimano Curado Bantham baitcaster that I use in the estuaries on the goldy for bread and butter species. I have recently noticed that it is looking low on line. I currently have a cheap braid on it (that was recommended to me when I bought it) and was told that alot of braids do not go well on baitcasters as they flatten out and cause the line the catch causing a birds nests.

Are certain makes of braid good for baitcaster or is Mono the way to go?
What is the best line I should use?

Oh, by the way it is used for lures and rarely SP's.

    Thanks
    Craig

I would stick to the braid for your lure casting, if you go back to mono you will find you are unable to feel the action of the lure. As you are getting low on line, spool up 40-50 meters of mono in the breaking strain that you use on the reel and go for a couple of casts and see if you notice any difference in action, then make the final decission, braid/mono, based on your experence. Hope this helps.

Go for Braid as you will be able to feel the action of the lure much better. If you half fill the spool with mono before loading the braid it isn't really expensive.

Gday, yea stick to the braid. Heaps more feel and thinner diameter. Try another brand if you did not like your current one. The only thing mono is good for these days is making leader!!

Another reason i would stay with braid is that because braid has a fine diametre your lures will dive deeper.

i would try another braid, different line classes as well, and if you are not happy with your reel get something better, ther are some great reels on the market that are really good value for money

What sort of a run have you had out of the braid Craig? Have you had the birds nests etc while you have been using it? If not, and if you've been happy with the performance, stick with what works for you.

    Cheers

Thanks for the great advise fellas.

    Ian,
I should have thought of just incresing the amount of backing. That is real simple and solves my problem.

    Dave,
I have only had a few birds nests due to my error not the braid I am currently using.

Could anyone recommend any braids that go well on baitcasters? The problem is I can't remember the name of my braid and have not found what i think it looks like.

    Regards
    Craig

I usually specifically target threadfin salmon, and for that purpose, I use only mono. Reason: Some stretch is necessary during the initial hit and run phase and braid simply can't withstand it. It breaks, or hooks pull.

Just my opinion based on my experience.

I use braided line exclusively for baitcast n spinning , my drag set is lowered to compensate for the non stretch characteristics of braided line which cause line break , hook pulled and in certain extreme condition , breaking the rod .

I find the Japanese braided line is the better choise for baitcast reel while for spinning , Tuffline XP from USA is hard to beat for value . The reason Tuffline XP does not perform well with baitcast reels is that , XP will be sticky after some usage and this impeded the spool rotations when being cast .

Birdness is less a problem with braided line but occasional wind knot can occur when the line being cast comes out from the spool faster then the lure's travel speed , too full in filling the spinning reel's spool cause this wind knot .

    Try Power pro, great stuff!

small diametre, very strong, does not dig into the spool.....
    bit expensive though.

I;m sure you'll be happy with it.

the other good option is Fins, braid, a little thinker in diameter though.

    Both cast well.
