    What is Braid coated with?

    What is Braid coated with?

I purchased some suffix Matrix Pro braid (green) via ebay and notice that when I spooled my reel I had quite a liberal coating of green stuff all over my fingers. Is this normal for the outer coating of braid to smudge off?

    cheers

Not sure exactly what the coating is but I have also noticed that some of the colour comes off new fireline as well so I wouldn't be concerned about it.

fireline is differents, its fused and not a true braid as such

Yep it is fused and not a "true" braid as such but I bet both are coated in much the same stuff hence the analogy

Thanks for replies so far but I am still interested in opinions on whether 'true' braid should loose so much of their outer coating and also if someone could tell me what is the outer coating / braid made of.

Part of my reason for paranoia is that I bought the line via EBay and I have since read some horror stories about cheaper braid being sold as more expensive braid etc

My green braid here doesn't seem to be losing 'paint'. But ..... my pink fireline.......the 'paint' or whatever it is, can get onto my fingers, and often if you tie the fireline to terminals...like eyes of hooks etc, the pink 'paint' sticks to the eye of the hook. So you get this very flouro dark pink/red stuff on the metal.

When it comes to the word 'fused', I sometimes think this word is mis-used. Because the way that I see it, the gelspun fibres in fireline is not truly fused together, but is more like held together with a coat of whatever it is.

i guess thats all depends on ones interpretation of "fused"

If I was to interpret 'fused' GSP, I would originally and incorrectly assume that individual fibres got so hot that they melted slightly and bonded together to produce something thicker and stronger. That's what my original interpretation would be.

Fireline is thermo fused, it is put through a heat treatment which welds the outside.negating the need for braiding, the outer lining comes off with use.
True braids are covered with a dye or poly urethane, partly to lubricate the strands to speed up the braiding process. Braid like Bionic which has an 8 pick 8 carrier is one of the tightest weaves which helps keep a perfect round which helps prevent the line cutting into itself(which is an inherant problem with fused lines).
All braid and fused lines will go white with use, it does not affect the strength of the line, just changes the colour.

When I snip fireline with cutters, the individual fibres seem to spread out.
