Hi Greg, I would think the 3500 may be ok but i would prefer the 6500 for the offshore scene.
Overheads are good but it all comes down to personal choice.
The TLD models or charter specials would suit.
There are many good brands out there mate.
I'm sure other ausfish members can give you some great idea's on whats the best gear to use.

mate I got a btr65 great reel has not let me down on some very big fish liked it so mutch I got a nother one but would not now my advice is go a spheros 12000 I do not like the bait runner feature gets knoked at the worst of times but are bullet proof the spheros 12000 is slightly faster 4.6-1 as aposed to btr 4.2-1 both hold very close to the same amount of line and lighter 28.4oz compared to 30.7oz

I am also a fan of spin reels. Used an overhead offshore for the last 2 years, but just do not like them so recently bought a big spin and am way happier. I got an okuma epix 80 which is great, but that was mostly due to price and that I will only use it each month or so.

Othes that use overheads love them. I do not think that you can have anyone say which is best for you. You really need to give both a go and decide for yourself.

You will end up like most of us and have both, i have mono on my baitrunner for floatlining and braid on a tyrnos overhead for bottom bashing, it really comes down to persoanl preference, I would thinkt he 3500 baitrunner would account for most of the fish out there so give it a go and if you find it is underdone then look for an upgrade, but I know a lot use the 4500 offshore and I have used one aswell and haven't had a problem with it

Been using a Wilson Live Fibre !0 - 15 Kg Zws65xj TLD15 loaded with 30 lb Bionic braid, found it to be a Great outfit for general angling, sensitive tip and strong butt ,also have a Wilson Supergraph Long stroker TLD20 loaded with 50 lb Bionic braid, hauled up some monster fish up in Wiepa.

Re: rod & reel advice needed

The baitrunner for float linning and a live fibre 10-15kg rod matched to a TLD 20 and 30lb braid for botom bouncing and big live baits. Must admit that I use a 10000 size reel for botom bouncing from the 36's and deeper as the 6-1 retrieve makes pulling up to rebait a more comfortable job.

Re: rod & reel advice needed

if you are gonna buy a tld i reakon go for a tyrnos... has 5to1 ratio and more drag... and im hoping will be just as reliable as the tld.. and they are just a sexy bit of gear

can get a tyrnos for about 210 around the place nowadays
