Thread: Making Sinkers

    Making Sinkers

I have recently found a lead sinker mould under the house. I was just wondering what type of material is used to create the hole in the middle of the sinkers?

I figure that it will need a higher melting point than the lead, yet expand with the molten lead being poured around and then contract when the lead sets so it can be removed. Any help?

what sort of shape sinkers are they?? some do not need a serperate piece, small ball types do and any wire of suitable size will do, just make sure it is rather stiff, not soft like say copper.

On the fishnet website, there's some discussion about the dangers of lead poisoning in the process of making lead sinkers. So make sure that everybody knows how to protect themselves before going about melting lead etc.

yep bike spokes would be perfect, and not onle lead poisoning but, you just have not lived untill you get a "drop" of molten lead on you, crap that hurts.

New way of telling your neighbour makes his own sinkers. His kids bike wheels are no longer round.....

    Re: Making Sinkers

Braising wire also works well, whatever you use, give it a rub on a bar of soap before you start & the sinkers will slide off easier.
Also be wary of any water getting into your molten lead, even one drop will explode & spray lead everywhere, not really a job for a rainy day.

i use the stainless wire that comes as a support for paper in desktop HP printers and the like. It is thicker than bike spoke wire and better suited to 50lb line etc

You are all a wealth of knowledge. Thanks for all the suggestions, and I will try them all and see which one works best for me.

With the lead poisoning; apart from wearing a normal dust mask, gloves and safety glasses, what else should I do to protect myself? What type filters on the mask are best?
