Trolling- hex heads- what distance behind?

I was having a "discussion" with a know all about how far you should have your your hex heads behind a boat when trolling. How far do you put them back and why?

Although I havent dome much trolling work, what we did worked for us. Depends on what position the rod is in the boat, We ran hex heads, albeit small ones on the face of the first wake and started a spread from there. So I suppose you could say, minimum 20M or so from the back of the boat. Others with more experiance will tell you more about it. Just a quick observation... if this bloke u were talling to was a "know it all" chances are he doesn't know the first thing, so dont worry about his opinion as it is just that.

Yeah this bloke basically had them in the prop they were so close. I dunno how the fish were gonna see them

G'day Johnny,

I had an email discussion with Peter Pakula about this issue a while back (I'll qualify these comments by adding that we were talking about pakula's, but the principle here is the same), and he said that fish are actually attracted to the wash disturbance of the boat, and can easily see trolled lures in the prop wash, even though humans can't see the lures from above.

So the take home message was that you'd be surprised how close to the boat you can troll lures for them to still be effective.

I agree with Red Bull because I was told similiar to that at the meeting of the Hervey Bay Gamefishing Club in reference to Pacific Lures.

If they were running lures right in close in the prop wash that is ok, but i'd imagine you'd only want one... maybe 2 there. Dont forget this is where they run the teasers and birds aswell, so it is ok to run them in close.

For high speed trolling, one just toward the end of the wash and one a long way back out in clear water. Obviously the more boats that are around the shorter you have to keep running them to avoid other people driving over the top. Yes you will get hits in close but your lures will blow out more.

For Billies you troll at 6.5knots and have most of your lures contained within the distance your propwash goes back and then one out in clear water. A cheap metal head high speed lure at shotgun position was one of our top lures two seasons ago.
