G'day everyone,

In two weekends time we are heading to Bramston Beach, one of our favourite spots about 15km north of Innisfail. I havn't fished there all that much, but plan to have fish quite abit while im there. Last time I was there, it was abit of a rush to get my gear together as It was a quickly planned trip. So I got hold of some cheap Pucci 4.5lb Mono and chucked a heap of that on my Viva Harbour surf reel, and had to be content with that. Got plenty of hits in the surf, but no fish, and I found the line to be pretty poor, and it wouldn't cast to well and had numerous tangles (then again, it was a windy day..).

Was after your opinion on what line I should be putting on the reel. Mono, Braid?. Is 4.5 lb to light? And also maybe some rig suggestions for the fishing as I havn't done a lot of Surf fishing and Id like to have an idea of some good rigs. Im not after any fish in particular, aslong as it gets on my plate and goes well with spices im happy. Will match the Reel with my 14 foot Big Breaker Rod, and plan to fish with live/dead bait and maybe throw some spoons around.

I'd take a fair wack of that line off the reel, it looks overfull to me! I go on about 2mm gap to the lip myself.

4.5lb might be a bit light for surf, try a thin 9lb (0.25mm or thinner).

.. or do you mean 4.5kg ? which would be more on the money I like the 18lb -22lb bracket.

Feral, it might look over-full, but it's pretty good.

Chris - 4.5 LB . As I said, the trip was planned quick, and I didn't have any other line to throw on it, but a heap of this 4.5 Pucci stuff. I knew it would be Ultra-Light, but if I wanted to have a fish, it would have to do the job. I can get hold of some Platinum, or Trilene, thats not a problem. What lb bracket though? 10-18 ?

Any rig suggestions?. I just use a running ball sinker down to a black barrel swivel with 25lb trace and what ever hooks (gang's for large bait, suicider's or little circles) for singles.

jeez up around innisfail i'd be forgetting the baits & throwing spoons, slugs and poppers near the closest rocky form or drain in a bank. Sure to be a stinky old GT, queenie etc that will come to stretch your arms. We caught GTs on barrels of skinny bamboo stalks wrapped in auminium foil on Hinchinbrook - you don't need to get to complicated, just make it sparkle and fizz.

If you do fish a bait, cast net livies and set them under a balloon if the wind is offshore, its surprising how #close the macks come up north.

Yeah at the resort we are staying in at Bramston, all you have to do is walk 50m East from your cabin and your on the beach!. Its perfect. And even better - as soon as you hit the beach from your cabin at the resort, there is a large gutter in the surf, which on high tide makes it a fishing paradise!. Last time I was there I kept getting good size hits with my bait, but no success. A guy further down the beach had a massive surf rod (must of been custom made), and he was casting bait (squid and prawns 2gether) right into the back of the gutter, huge casts. He didn't get much but a few little Shovel Nose sharkies. Will try some spoons as you said, maybe even a few poppers (we'll see what the wind is doing ).
