Can u have no leader just main line strait to sp?

    Is a leader necessary?
I always use one but now I am curious of the advantages of the leader.
    any ideas?

Re: Can u have no leader just main line strait to

when I fish for trout (freshwater ones), I very rarely use a leader. Normally 2kg line strait to the lure.
Dont use a leader surf fishing
fly fishing is nearly a reverse leader, sya 10lb at the fly line down to a 2lb tippet.
All depends how I feel at the time

    G'day
    # #I will say yes, a leader is nessecary. They will generally be slightly heavier than the mainline, preferably made of flurocarbon for maximum abrasion resistance and lowest possibe visibility.

as dave said the leader is a good shock absorber as well especially with braid,it allows you to use small main line and heavier, good abrasion resistent line for the leader fluorocarbon brands are the best in my opinion. cheers AL

Re: Can u have no leader just main line strait to

When using sp's or small hb's I dont use a leader I fish the main line down to the lure I dont use braid (highly visible) so the thin mono acts as a leader (low visibilty), I think that the heavier leader detracts from the lures action and the thicker line is obviously more visible and if a toothy critter gets hold of your line a mono leader is fairly useless a small chopper can bite through 40lb no problem. When I am fishing big lures (cd 18's, big poopers and big sp's) around rocky structure I then use a 80lb leader. I never use a leader on the beach.

If you are using braid for a main line, then yes you probably should use a leader. The braid is visible, and as it has no stretch, you will pull a few more hooks

If you are using mono main line, then no you don't have to use a leader at all.

Re: Can u have no leader just main line strait to

it depends on what ur fishing for? where your at? and what you fishing with?..

biggerfish.. more points to break the line...eg. teeth, etc - Yes leader.

light fishing on the beach.. - No.

Casting sp's for bream and lizards - Highly recommended.

when using plactics, with braid or nylon coated (eg, fireline) its bests that leader is used, for bother cast ability and reasurants that you will land a larger fish.
