Hi guys I just bought a symetre 4000 reel and am looking at spooling it up with a Braid of around 20 pounds should I go a Fused GSP like fireline or a braid GSP like Platil?
I will mainly be using it for throwing bigger soft plastic for barra, jacks and grunter or small slugs on the flats or bommies for gt's salmon and queenies.
I think a fused braid behaves better on a spining reel but either of these will be fine,I think you'll find that the Platil Millenium is a fused braid also.
Thanks Banshee, yeah I just looked at an add for Platil and you're right it is fused.
I use 4 pound fireline on my bream gear and find it works well but have heard people say that it is too stiff a line anything over 10pounds.
I find the 4pound stuff softens up after a couple of trips I assume the heavier stuff would to ?
I'm running 30 lbs in Fireline and Platil on two different overheads and the Fireline is noticably "stiffer" than the Platil, but this may work in your favour, the only experience I've had with braid on spin gear was with a true braid on a small old reel and it was a nightmare with coils of line being pulled off during casting resulting in a lot of knots.I'm looking at getting a medium to small spin set up shortly for fishing Snapper on plastic and I'll be spooling it with Fireline(probably the new crystal stuff).
I run 20lb fireline on a CD90 Okuma and 30lb Hercules braid on a Penn Captiva 8000, both with that similar stiff waxy texture and yes they were both stiff initially but after a session or two they both softened up ok.
if abrasion resistance is most important, go for a true 8-ply braid like bionic or TD sensor. noticeably better than fused lines like Finns and Fireline
I use 20 pound fireline on my rock spinning gear with no problems and 4 pound fireline on my bream gear with no problems but when i loaded my symetre 4000 up with 14 pound fireline and tried to soft plastic with it i lost about half of it to knots and tangles. its too stiff. although it was fine for spinning metal lures but with the plastics it was rubbish
I think the fused GSP behaves better on casting outfits than the braided type. The trouble with braided line is that it doesn't stay round but flattens out on the spool. This can lead to problems casting on baitcaster reels as the braid will stick to the underlying layers on the reel and bring your casts to a sudden halt.
The braided lines are quite a bit finer for breaking strain than the fused so I prefer them for deepwater bottom fishing. This is not to say that the fused lines don't also work well in this application.
