Hey All
What do you think is the best knot to use for attaching mono leader to braid.????
I have thirty pound braid and what would be the best sort/size leader to use.??
Cheers
Ronnie
Surgeon's Knot
Surgeons Knot
The Surgeon's Knot is a good knot to use when two different line sizes are being joined.
* Lay the two lines against each other, overlapping about 10 inches
* Working the two lines as one, tie an Overhand Knot. It will be necessary to pull one line (say the leader) completely through this loop.
* Pull the leader through this loop again.
* Pass the other end through the loop.
* The formed knot can now be worked into shape.
hey mate
What are you chasin with your outfit. I would use varnish for leader with a bimidi twist for your leader not

# # Why not just use a swivel?????
# # I've tried a few different Hi-tech ways of attaching gear, but I keep coming back to the humble double blood knot with a swivel to the trace as it hasn't let me down yet where other methods have.
# # Just my opinion & will probably be howled down, but a simple proven method can often be better.
# # I do understand the advantages of a wind-on leader, but unless you are planning on catching REALLY big fish, I think most of the advantages are lost.
#
# # As I said, just my opinion,

Muzz you've made a good point. Everyone has automatically assumed that Ronnie is going to be casting lures, but if she is only going to be dropping a bait down then a swivel is a viable option. I will bring up however that blood knots can slip on terminal tackle using braid but there are plenty of adaptations or other just as simple knots that work well on braid connections. I'd also caution people on running a sinker on braid as it can ruff the strands up a bit.
Hi Jeremy,
The knot I use for braid is a blood knot with an extra loop through the eye before turning around the main line, then back through BOTH loops, ( hope that makes sence). This knot has never let go with 30 to 80 lb braid.
As you said, sinkers are a no-no on braid.

Twisted leader knot with never a problem.
I've been using the Twisted Leader knot for a while, and never had a problem with it... Except that you do lose a little of your line strength.
I am currently trialling a new setup which consists of a really short 25 turn bimini twist and then reverse albrighting the leader on. Used this on saturday at Mud, and instead of busting off when I got snagged, I was able to pull the jig head right off (And usually brought some of the reef with it)! It's really strong, and so far I am VERY impressed with it.
hey guys
Thanks fo rthe tips. Will give a suggestions a whirl and let you know what I think.

simple, a uni to half blood, never break at the leader knot,
Ronnie,
why tie knots, that is so september 10. Mate wind on leaders. Make a double in your braid and simply loop to loop your wind on leader onto the braid.
This has been used in the game scene for years and really filtering down through the ranks. Up here in Darwin a lot of Barra boys are now using wind ons.
You can get them from 40lb right through to 600 and they are really cost effective if you wish to buy them. You can also make them yourself if you like to tinker a bit with fishing gear.
Muzz, I think that knot is called a "improved clinch"??or "clinched half blood" knotOriginally Posted by onerabbit
Sounds just like the knot my dear ol daddy showed me as a lad and have used for almost every thing since. twice through the eye, 5 turns up the mainline and back through the 2 loops. Am i close?
I find great for lines up to 30lb in mono. over that i just do a locked blood knot with only three turns for my 60lb mono leader.
Ronnie,
Leader to braid, Albright all the way. I tried it in reverse once but it failed to bind properly? i think the braided double was too slipery for it. works fine as standard and runs throught the guides a treat. Also, as Jeremy87 said, if your just dropping a bait then use a swivel as the sinker will rough up the braid.
cheers, roo.
Hey 'roo,
I think you probably got me on the name of it, but my dad showed me that knot as a kid & like you said, I still use it for nearly everything.
I still use it to tie swivels to 80 lb braid.
Also agree, with heavy mono, is still a good knot with a few less turns.
