    Rigging gulp (squid style lures)

Hi everyone, my name is Tom and I am new to this site (lost my password for a while but I am back).

I just wanted to ask if anyone can give me advice on how to rig the new berkley gulp squids (mainly will be used unweighted on a drop shot style system). I just can't work out how to rig them?? A photo would be really appreciated of someone has the time. I will be using them on the reefs out of darwin harbour to target black jewfish and golden snapper (fingermark).

    Thanks
    Tom

I'll be interested to see what responses you get. I thought a couple of snelled hooks would work a treat.

Thanks for that - I had that idea too - much like I would rig a dead squid, but I also have thought about using a bait needle and threading the leader through with a hook coming out underneath near the "tenticles"?? Still would love to hear more ideas -especially ones people have used before!
    Thanks

    Tom,

We have been using them for a while now in water up to 100m deep, there are two ways we rig them.
First is on a big strong jig head ,TT's Lures do a great range of heavy jig heads. In 80m we have been using 1oz 7/0 Heavy and just rig them with the 7/0 coming out from the middle of the squid.
Alternatively you can run them on a twin hook rig and fish them just like a floated bait.

Both rigs work well and on some days will out fish bait.

Thanks for that - some great ideas
I bought a couple of 1 1/2 ounce 8/0 jigheads (lots of water movement in Darwin) so I will try that
I also thought about rigging it up with a two hook rig on my leader with a heavy sinker on the main line for when I need more weight - would that work?

Can't wait to try them - Jason wondering if you had had much luck with them and how they compare to a live bait?

    Tom,

The plastics will out fish dead baits on most days when used correctly and you will encounter better fish on the plastics. However live bait is still the benchmark for very large fish.

Re: Rigging gulp (squid style lures)

Thanks for that - we usually use dead local squid off the trawlers becasue squid seem to be so hard to catch up here (I think all the jewfish and coral trout have eaten them) - the only live squid I ever used was thrown up by a coral trout after we caught him

I will post my results here - look out for them

P.S. I have bought the 6" squid, which I reckon should be about right for a jewfish?
