Setting up Leaders for Awoonga Barra?

Hey Guys.

I'm heading up to Awoonga in Mid-November and I'm just wondering on what you guys use, leader wise, when fishing for those big meter plus Barra in the sticks? I have seen and heard that people use upto 80lb mono and then twist the 80lb to make it way more abrasion resistant. Does this effect the hook up rate, i.e. Will it spook the Barra seeing monofilament cable coming from a lure. I know they arn't exactly Bream but just curious.

Also knots etc. would be helpful. One more thing, doubling the braid for about 20cms above the leader for reassurence? Should I do this on top? Any info is helpful.

Troy, I used to use a 60lb mono leader casting into the timber up here at prossie dam but have actually gone done to a 40lb fluro leader now as the fluro is more abbrasive resistant for holding onto the big fish as they bulldose there way through the timber. In the open basin area around the weedbeds etc I go down to a 25lb Fluro leader with no problems at all I have found that the lighter fluro leaders have increased my hookup rate. The connecting knot that I use with no probs to date is the uni to uni join with the braid end doubled so the braid has less of a chance of cutting through the leader....

Thanks mate. I think I may use some 40lb fluoro leader then double it over. Then crimping each end of the leader to stop it unravelling. Also adding a heavy guage wire snap for easy lure changing at the lure end of the leader. Then putting some tubing at each end of the leader so the snap and line don't cut through. I'm going to double the braid over as well with a spider hitch.

Just I don't know how to connect the doubled leader to the doubled braid.

As for trolling I will just use some 20lb braid along with 30lb fluoro leader.

Have a look at the Shogun Hawaiian snaps. they are very simple and seem to be bullet proof......... [smiley=rifle.gif]

ok, so maybe nothing's bullet proof but they do seem to be very strong and they would want to be for the price ($22 for a pack of 12)

40 to 60lb fluorocarbon. 2 meters. anchore it halfway (bench vice soft jaw) slide a #1 Aliminium crimp right up to the vice. half way along use a #1 tube (protect the mono from chaffing) put a super strength double clip over the tubing.

so <------1mtr------->/vice /<-crimp-----------------tube & clip---------------->

now holding the tag end twist and keep twisting. eventually the fluro will will double on itself at the point of the clip leaving a loop. Let the fluro double up all the way, put the tag through the crimp and crimp it.

Walah, twisted leader. You only need one crimp it will stay twisted and you don't have a crimp right on the lure.

Tips: Hang a weight on the clip while twisting. When finished slide a soft lumo bean #5 down the line and over the crimp so you can A see the bastard and B don't wind it through the bloody end runner of your rod.

Tie this to you braid (doubled) with double a uni knot.
