If your not real sure about the quality Andrew, take it home and pull it apart.
You'll be able to tell the quality straight away. If it's no good take it back and get your money back.
I buy the cheap versions of the shimano spinners for kids to use in the river. Who cares about them dropping them in the water or forgetting to rinse them. On a down side, that doesn't get the younguns in good habits about looking after gear

    Re: Supermarket fishing gear?

I usually deal with a well known tackle shop in the Ballina area and they stock the cheapies as you would find in a supermarket as well as the better quality brands. I have had my time with the cheaper gear and a lot of it is playing submarine in some of the deeper dams. There is a borderline though where you can get reasonable gear at a good price, and then theres the good stuff. The owner of the tackle shop that I deal with usually will tell me to leave it alone or give qualified information on the quality of the gear. This is something you won't get from a shop assistant at your local corner supermarket. cheers, steve.

Well I went and bit the bullet and went to the Supermarket in question but only because I am a rep who frequents these stores daily and they had a 25% off sale on all fishing gear so I selected their most expensive reel in the range which was a Penn and got it reduced down to $69 from $79 so I will spool it up and give it a bash around Mud Island on Saturday. Will let you know if this reel gets a thumbs up or down soon.

attempting that would be a disaster for me!!!!!i have never succesfully put a reel back together after opening it. i only open up a reel that is terminal or during its final hours and i normally do it just to see what it ate knowing fully well that the end is upon us!

Well jez and suze I have just loaded up the braid on the new real. I did take it apart and it seems to be a reasonable quality reel for the money. Nearly $20 off the marked price makes it great value in fact. Will be testing it out in the morning when I go hunting Snapper with Scalem.

    Re: Supermarket fishing gear?

Thanks Mike. We don't really need luck though because the snapper will follow us all around the bay. They are just itching to jump on. Good luck. Hope we see you out there tomorrow. We will be in a red 15 foot fibreglass Mustang with a grey Johnson 70 on the back and white canopy. Unmistakeable boat with the large Bush & Beach stickers and Ausfish stickers as well.
