baitcasting, distances with lighter weight?
First off, I have been using baitcasters for many years now so am proficient in casting them, though you can always learn more and get better.
When casting 7g spinnerbaits I find I get about a 5m decrease in casting distance compared to a 10g spinnerbait. I am casting with a Daiwa CVX 103a and a SFS spinnerbait rod, 8lb platypus braid.
My questions is, will getting a new reel make up the distance decrease in using the lighter weight or, is it simple that everyone out there gets a significant decrease in distance casting 1/4oz with baitcasters? I am casting from shore 90% of the time and I prefer my baitcaster over threadline(already got one and use it for anything below 7g) as I regularly use heavier lures aswell.

Re: baitcasting, distances with lighter weight?
maybe its time to convert from barrel overhead to low profile?
their smaller lighter and u can get great distance out of them when casting light. they can also handle heavier lures too.
check out the daiwa Sol.

Re: baitcasting, distances with lighter weight?
There will be no advantage that I can see in distance by converting to low profile, for example,a Calaise,Chronarch or Curado in 100 size has the same size spool/drag as the Calcuta in a 100 size, same goes for the 200's.I would be surprised if the Daiwas were different as far as the spools go but don't have access to the various models to check for sure, they (the new Daiwa low profiles) may have a larger drag due to the offset gearbox but this will have no bearing on castability.
Distance and accuracy with light lures is relevant to spool size/weight and line diametrer/rod combination,a 100 size reel with a wiffle spool will cast lighter lures than a standard 100 useing the same line/rod, likewise a standard 50 will edge out the 100 wiffle while the Daiwa Liberto Pixy and the Shimano Chronarch MG 50 both wiffle spools are at the top of the tree when it comes to the ultra light lures(in my opinion).
I run a standard Calcutta 50 on an entry level 1-2kg Livefibre Lightning and have found that 3.5 grams (28g to the ounce) is about the bottom of my limit, like you I fish the banks of creeks on foot and find I can make most shots with the 3.5g, as for distance with this weight I have no idea.

Re: baitcasting, distances with lighter weight?
Thanks for the reply there guys. Think from the response my options are either a lighter spool for my CVX as it is currently a stock, nonwiffle spool. Or save up for a pixy/sol/MG50.
Cheers
