Re: ABU smart mag
# # # I picked up a 6600D5 on ebay the other week because it looked the goods but didn't realise they have a disengaging level wind which I think defeats the purpose of the mag brake to some degree IMO. Then again, maybe the mag brake is there for that very reason because the level wind robs you of distance on the cast so they need to slow the spool down to compensate. Also , they have a double sided drag which initially looks like a better design but on closer inspection there is only 2 drag washers in total with less surface area than the traditional 5-6k series so logic says they probably have less drag power. I Immediately resold the 6600D5 on ebay and went looking for a traditional 65/6600C4. Better casts, better drag. If you just have to have a mag brake there are mag versions of the traditional 5500 out there or there are mag conversions available.

Thanks mate for a much appreciated reply. I was not aware of the disengaging levelwind.
Wont be getting this reel now, for that reason.
I have a 6500ctc3 mag elite that I use for floating pillies to school macks(no levelwind)
and it has been such a great reel, I thought I might get a smaller reel with levelwind and mag.for throwing lures. might look at some Shimanos.
cheers
