    homemade fads

hey guys has anyone read "A cheap homemade fishing flasher - teaser - FAD" on the ebay site. it talks about making a teaser/fad out of cds. it sounds good for trolling etc but do you rekon it would be worth a go off the rocks for kings etc just throwing it out as far as possible with some line tied to it for retrieval?

for those who havent read it

I do a stack of kayak fishing. Up this way we catch mackeral, cobia, kings and tuna so I started thinking about putting a bit of flash in the water to keep the predators in one spot without using berley. For a kayak fisherman, I don't really like berley because of the shark factor. Predatory fish are attracted to sharp, fast flashes so a teaser is probably a good thing. The other night I slapped together a flasher in about 10 minutes and it does the job beautifully. I just drop it off the kayak and troll around it or cast into it.

    Here's what you need:

3-5 CD's preferably shiny on both sides

A few big swivels and large split rings

    A ball sinker

    Short length of 60lb+ mono

    A power drill

An empty 2 litre milk bottle with a handle

It's so easy, all you want to do is drill holes in the CD's so they hang off each other in a series. One above the other. When the holes are drilled attach the split rings and the swivels. This makes the flasher spin in the water. On the bottom CD attach the ball sinker. On the top CD attach about a metre of cord and tie it off to the milk bottle.

    Re: homemade fads

I have read the artical and though it was a good idea at the time. but I was of the opion that "FADS" worked more over a long time period not just a hit and miss thing
Rainbow Trout is NOT skittle flavoured fish.........

I think that it's meaning more teaser than what is formally known as a FAD.

Fish Attracting Device does kinda fit this, but not in the traditional sense we know.

The CD idea has been used heaps. There is a South African guy (I think he is) that was using them and marketing his ones alot. Sunny will know the one I'm talking about....

All the flashing gives the predators the idea it is a school of baitfish.

What a great idea. I think I will make one. Would be interesting to tie one off the stearn and float pillies to it.

    Hi All

An old trick (and not necessarily environmentally sound) that used to be employed up north on bright oily calm days with little current was to spread some broadsheet newspaper pages into a square (2 or 4 pages was enough) and let the "FAD" drift away.

10-15 minutes was allowed for small fish to start sheltering under the FAD. Anglers would then start throwing lures through the square and they used to do quite well.

Again, not the most environmentally friendly technique.

Sometimes the simple things work the best.

I'd be very interested in how these go.

Might employ the cd theory in the not so distant future.

Might be worth floating one of these out the back if there are fish working the surface but are a bit flighty.May work and get them within casting range

This system is being used for spearfishing to lure fish up. They call them flashers and you should be able to see a few pictures of some homemade jobs if you do a search on the spearfishing forum.
