    E-BAY spinning reels

Just want an unsight into what you all think about the quality of spinning reels sold on Ebay. I have purched a few in the 4000 - 6000 range and so far so good but some of them are a bit suspect when one tyhinks of quality.

Thinking about getting a decent haevy spin rod but would like some feedback first

    cheers

I think it all depends on who you buy from. Alot of the reels from asia would be cheap rip offs I think. I have bought a couple from the US and have been very pleased with the price and quality.

As blackened said, stick with a reputable brand. Though the fishing gear on ebay seems to fetch a fair dollar.

    I agree with fishface!
'New old stock' and 'used' US made Penn Spinfishers are quality reels, plenty for sale on Ebay US. Also Penn Slammers, more expensive of course but great reels!
Good value to be had if you snipe a bargain, check sellers feedback before purchase and ask for shipping quote. I pay about $30 for UPS Global Priority, suprisingly fast shipment, insured for US$100 also.
Like the old saying goes, you get what you pay for, cheap Chinese reels don't last as long as quality products.
As for a heavy spin rod, hunt around the tackle shops for an Ugly Stik, strong and good value for $, IMO way better than Ebay units, also Big W and K Mart sell 'em, sometimes they are on special or discounted etc.
    Cheers and good hunting!

amart, k. mart BCF and Tackle world all have really good prices on combos and rod/reels seperately running into xmas. especially that amart that no one seems to like.

Why risk cheap junk on ebay when you can quality Penn and Shimano stuff at the above stores at cheap prices

If you want a good value heavy spin rod I don't think you can go past the Silstar Crystal Power Tip. Silstar advertise them as the worlds strongest rod. I have a couple of them and they are tough as nails, I'd take one over an Ugly Stik every time as I find the Ugly Stiks a bit soft.

Top rods the Silstars, I have a Crystal Blue Power Tip 7' rated to 15kgs (has enough guides to be used as an overhead rod as well as a spinner) and a 6' spin jig rod rated for 80lb braid and jigs up to 400gms, always get a kick almost lifting mates off the ground showing them how the jig rod loads up.

    Re: E-BAY spinning reels

Saw a great combo in my local tackle store the other day. Penn 2.4mtr 5-8kg medium action rod matched with a 4000-6000 reel.(Not sure of exact size) Cost around the $100 dollar mark.
Not the most expensive combo from Penn, but surely reasonable quality.

I have found that BCF, Tackleworld and other NAME store have been up to 20% more expensive than my locla shop. They seem as happy to help as my local but the cost difference is surprising. I have said their name on other posts but am unsure of the rules. So if you live on the Goldie and want to know where they are PM me.

I have bought lures, jig heads, net and other stuff from eBay but would be careful buying reels as there are a lot of cheap knockoffs there.

    Re: E-BAY spinning reels

bought an ebay 5000 size chinese spinning reel for $50 or so and it lasted couple of weeks. Bought a used sahara 2000 from private guy on ebay but it was well worn and I probably paid too much $70. Hard to judge the state of a second handy. I stop in to the pawn shops round byron ballina and sometimes see just the thing. Got a new penn powerstick 10-12boat rod with a 7000c3 for $90. Better than any ebay result so far.

I decided to go to a shop instead and bought a great Penn 6000. Already caught a few fish and happy with the drag. Will be going to visit in-laws in Tokyo soon...............I will go into the fish and tackle shop and find something good. Got dragged out by the wife last time after 2 hours of drooling.

    Thanks for the tips guys

    Re: E-BAY spinning reels

I have bought a few reels off ebay out of the USA and some rebult ones out of Asia and they are all fine and cheap compared to here but the warranty is usually worthless as you have to return to the place of purchase, although someone on the AKFF had a local business honour the warranty. Several of the kayakers on AKFF have bought cheapies off ebay and had no problems. Some people say you get what you pay for and you do but the name shimano seems to cost a lot. (I am usually happy to pay)

    Re: E-BAY spinning reels

Be very careful with the ebay stuff - a lot is chinese copies of chinese copies. I have a friend who works for an ebay store who just get containers full of EVERYTHING in for next to nothing. I have seen some of the returns - reel feet snapped, bail arm broken, gears not meshing...the list goes on.

Do yourself a favour, if you want a cheap reel to withstand most things with moderate performance, those little shimano fx jobs fromkmart last a surprisingly long time, and this is where the difference is. I've had cheap stuff, but you have to replace it every couple of years.
I have a 4000fx that i paid $40 for 8 years ago and it is still doing very well. $5 per year - can't beat that!

Before buying on ebay consider whether it's worth not having a warranty or having to pay US$30 each way to ship it back foir a warranty claim.

Might make the local bloke who knows a bit about tackle seem cheap.
If ya canna spear em, ya can jag em on a line.
