    PNG trip.. wat tackle?

    hey all,

I'm going to PNG for xmas.. while I'm there I'll be doing some fishing. What tackle should I take up there? I'm wanna catch those black bass..

at the moment I'm bringing my 6'2" barra raider rod, and my calcutta 700 with 30lbs braid.

wat lures and other tackle should I also bring?

    thanks

    regards

    robbie

try to get some bounty hunter lures,
they have been the benchmark for black bass now for many years

From what I`ve read about black bass, I would be taking a 15 kg rod(minimum)
700 Calcutta is perfect, but 50-65lb braid. Shad or Trembler type lures with extra strong rings and hooks and at least 60lb leader.

    Good luck, Reggy

what about a spear and a grass skirt...haha
and a couple of coconuts may help too
    jks

should be a great trip....its the monsoon season so be prepared.

i have heard that the use of condoms in the remote places back in png tends to work a treat!

    Can i come , to.
Let me know how you go , I would up the braid and 15 kg rod as said by others. 125 scorpions , large poppers basically same as barra but up all the rings /hooks etc........

    Re: PNG trip.. wat tackle?

Ive got a video of a guy form brisse who went up there chasing them, i think theyre called Nuigini Snapper now and he was using 80lb Braid, and was getting busted up quite regularly. Some of these fish go to about 15kg + and the fingermark also make a great fight on the gear, also the jakcs he caught.. Its unbeleivable

80lb braid was what he was using and some of them made it look like 2lb mono.

Definately something i want to do one day..

    Cheers

    thanks everyone for your replies..

will look into investing in some more heavier braid. does anyone know where braid is on special at the moment?

i got the link to the png black bass fishing tour guide which was shown on ET on the weekend..

man those black bass are MONSTERS! hopefully i will be holding one of them with a big grin like all those anglers!

    thanks

Went up there a few years ago.
Used custom rods (McGinn blanks I think they were), tricked up ABU 7000's, 60-80 pound leader, bounty hunter and ridgeback lures
30lb line is fishing light and you still get done plenty of times on 40.
Wind on leaders make things a bit quicker when you get busted up
Be prepared to lose lots of lures
There is an old video around by Rod Harrison and Dean Butler that might be worth a watch. I think ALex Julius made one too.
Black bass are the toughest fish in the world bar none (in this style of fishing anyway).

Attached some pics of me and the other blokes on the trip with blacks and spots from the trip just to wet you appetite
