Has anyone had any luck with sp's to catch these black bass? If so, what type and colour? My wallet seems to like the price of sp's rather than some of the HB lures that were mentioned throughout this thread.
Thanks
Robbie
And looks like ALex Julius still sells his video as well

It wasn't too bad from memory. Bait fishing somewhere around Moresby I think

Robbie,
I would go to at least a 30kg line class. A mate of mine, Ricard, runs the Bia lodge in West New Britain, PNG. You're not going with him by any chance? If you are just drop him a quick email (it's on his website) and he will be able to give you a run down all your tackle needs.
Ricard was the fishing guide on the ET fishing show which was on just a few weeks back. Really nice guy and a very good fisherman.
Have fun up there, it is pretty warm this time of year, to say the least.
Matt.
I think Wilsons still do the PNG Bass Stick. Great rod I used it to some effect, mostly being dragged across the boat. The reel is up to you but I used a Calcutta 400TE. If you get the Rod Harrison DVD you will notice that he does the drag up with a pair of multi-grips. If you can't stop them in a couple of feet, you've lost them. Trust me I still remember the pain.
Sorry forgot to add that the reel Rodney H was using was a ABU 7000.

Kev,
I'm not sure of the names of the rivers Ricard uses. He fishes 6 different rivers which are all a short boat trip from the lodge. Ricard is based in Kimbe (north coast, west new britain) and the airport (if you can call it that) is in Hoskins, about a 45min drive from Kimbe. He uses his new 32ft game boat to get to Baia lodge which takes a few hours. I have heard from others that Baia lodge is the best fishing of all the bass charters in PNG. He also offers fishing for reef fish and pelagics. I'm starting to sound like advertisment.
Matt.
Probably a similar area to where we fished. Some wild country in that area. I know what you mean about HOskins "airport". It's about as basic as they get and seems to be the congregation point for all the nationals with nothing to do for the day.Originally Posted by Matt_F
