    Bream Lures & Braid Advice

    Hi
I have just bought myself a nice little Penn/Daiwa graphite baitcaster combo spooled with Braid and am hoping to do some lure fishing for Bream and Flathead. Mostly fishing around oyster racks and rock edges, what size leader should I be using (6lb?) also any suggestions on lures, I could really appreciate the help, thanks

Could recommend you a heap of lures for bream except you wouldn't be able to cast them. As a general rule flathead will hit anything that goes past there face and looks remotely like food. Any hardbodied lure between 60mm and 100mm will do the trick. Fluro green and pink works well in dirty water wile naturals work better when the water is clearer. same deal with soft plastics. just make sure the jig heads is heavy enough to hold bottom.

    Hi Jeremy
when you say I won't be able to cast them, is that because of weight (or lack of it) because I will also be using a threadline outfit I have. I would really appreciate some bream lures (just a couple) as I have always fished with bait and only lures sometimes, but would like to try a bit more as it seems once you start you can't stop. Thanks.

rapala cd3's, ecogear sx40's and sx48's, jackell chubbies, 35mm rivers 2 sea bubbles pop's. any 2inch grubs with light jigs heads (less than 16th ounce) ands #2 or #4 hooks. Any 2-3inch stick bait. gulp minows, fry and saltwater prawns. Theres a good start, play round with colours as much as you want. punkinseed is tried and tested but colours that resemble jelly prawns will work well at this time of year.

Squidgie Flick Baits with Resin head jigs. When worked correctly they are deadly. Will catch Bream, Flathead and just about anything that is in the area. Also a big fan of Berkley Gulps. Just picked up myself some 1" Gulp Crabs. Keen to see how these go just casting them in near pylons and rock walls with no weight. Just let em drift down to the bottom with the current.
Whatever soft plastics you use, use the lightest weight you need to. You got to try to keep it in the Breams face for as long as you can. Hardbodies, Ecogear SX40's are brilliant. Only problem is that Jacks love them too. They normally win and keep the jewelry. Just get out there and give it a go. You'll have a ball

Oh as for leader? The lightest you can go for in the area your fishing. I use from 2lb through to 16lb. But generally about 6lb around bridge pylons and jetties. When they are skittish, the 4lb and 2lb comes out but its heart in the mouth stuff

6lb leader should be fine, although you may need to go higher if you do encounter any big bream in the racks.
If you do find that the fish are very finnicky, downsize the leader to as low as you are comfortable using.

Some lures I could reccomend for bream-

2inch gulp shrimp in new penny
    3inch gulp minnow in pumpkinseed
3inch powerbait bassminnow in pearl watermelon and galaxia green

and Ecogear sx-40 hardbodies are excellent on bream.

For Flathead i would use larger lures around 4-5inch size, they will eat pretty much anything that goes past them. Try to use ones with paddle tails as the action will cause more of a disturbance which should attract more fish.

    Hope this helps.
