dont understand ratio on reels please advize

I am looking at doing a lot more rock fishing and beach fishing and need to know the ratio difference on the reels. I need a fast retreive when throwing lazers etc , what is a good ratio ie. 5:4:1?
Also is it worth going braid for the rocks or is too risky with the barnicles etc...?
    Any help would be appreciated
    Thanks

If your chasing fast pelagics the higher the ratio the better to save ie what u said 5.4:1 and above, ideally 6.0 and over so that means for every rotation of the handle the spool turns 6 complete turns. the higher the ratio means more effort is required to wind the reel under the load of the fish and thats where u make use of the pump and wind retreive method and conversely the higher ratio reel will enable u to keep the line tensioned if the fish decides he wishes to run towards u.
Cant advise u on the braid - all accounts braid and rocks/snags dont mix as good as mono so they go for a heavier braid to compensate

thanks so much for that info , I will be looking for reels with 6 and over now. And if I get no more replies about the braid I might go to a 40lb braid for my rock fishing.
    Thanks

You didnt mention whether u were wanting an overhead or eggbeater reel?
the only problem looking at 6.0:1 and over is that you narrow your choices down dramatically 5.1 and over would certainally be adequate just wind faster > see what yr tackle store recommends I would tend to look at good quality robust gear as tuna kingies etc can make a mess of inferior gear. You didnt mention what yr chasing with the lazers - different matter if its tailor or salmon!!

U shud get a few more postings on the subject see what theyve got to say.

the ratio really does not matter it is the line retrieve rate that is important.
for example 6 to 1 on a 1 cm spool is 6 cm
    but 4 to 1 on a 3cm spool is 12 cm

so look for the retrieve rate

Yep, high gear ratio plus large diameter spool equals high retrieve rate.
Therefore a reel with say 4:1 with a large diameter spool, like just for example a Penn Spinfisher 8500 or 9500, will have quite a high retrieve rate.

yep thats rite the spinfisher would have to have about the largest diameter spool in their class outside of a seamartin !!! .
Dont know how many reels advertise their retreive rate but with their 4.7:1 ratio and big spool dia the penns must be getting up near the speedmasters 6.1 retreive speed. anyone out there use the 850ss /950ss off the rocks spinning for tuna etc??

Think some of the old mitchells were available in high speed gearing? can u still buy them new thou??

Re: dont understand ratio on reels please advize

As far as the old mitchells went, the 3 series had a lower ratio and the 4 series had the higher ratio.
ie a 396 had a ratio of about 3.6 or so, the 496 had about 4.1.
I think the ones you can buy new these days are an entirely different animal.

    Hi Gutzy,

Somebody put up a post some time ago now and he actually listed the retrieval length of line for different reels per one revolution of the handle.

You might have to do a search for it ......................

Can't help with the retreival problem but braid and rock don't mix, especialy if you are using lures. Could be expensive.

The Daiwa Emblem Pro 5000 has an advertised retrieve of 122cm per crank of the handle. That's the fastest eggbeater I've heard of. Tony N has one and could advise.

    G'day

I'm certain that shimano advertise the line retrieved per turn of the handle on their website

if fishing off the rocks, sounds asthough you might need to get a long handle gaff, it will make landing easier.

I'll try to attach a spreadsheet which might assist. All info from websites, not actual measurements
