    Burrum Heads

Hey everyone, when you feel like getting out of Brissie area for a few days definately go north!!!!! 3hours drive.. 8)
The decision is not when to fish, but what type would we go for today!
Burrum is amazing , Monday moses perch and winter whiting in plague proportions, Tuesday bream and muddies (yes, legal and on the line), Wednesday Flathead, more whiting & bream, Thursday back to the perch & bream, Friday just for a change some tailor!
The tides are interesting generally around the 3metre mark and the low's expose sand banks at least 1.5 clicks out into the bay.
Extra clues, don't believe the bait shops or "locals" . Fresh bait is preferred, but, mullet fillets and squid and all your general estuary & moreton bay knowledge will enable a good turn of fish variety. To pump for yabbies turn at the water tower, till the road runs out, a short sandy track will take you to yabby banks with hundreds of em. Livies, pick any jetty. Pippies, avoid the mud below sand areas, go for the coral sand. Best overall tip, wait for low tide, look at /around the banks, sus out the channels and go for it. The water has cooled and the barra and jacks have slowed dramatically since out last visit 4 weeks ago.
It is a great spot for all families. Tinnies are preferred due to the shallow water and coral outcrops close in, but don't be deterred with a glassie, the channels are very deep, the boats can be launched on low tide (high means bumping along the long cement ramps), the Burrum goes upstream quite deep for a long way.
It is a spot we will be returning too!!!!

    Re: Burrum Heads

    Hi dreamdays
My dad was a professional fisherman at Burrum and out of a family of 5 kids I was the only one not born there but still go back as much as i can. Like you said there is heaps o fish in the Burrum area specially whiting, bream an flathead. Tailor can be good at the first red beacon on a low tide..you can also expect to pick up a nice sweetlip here as well or a big trevally..oh by the way I am talking about walking to the beacon..Damn I could go on for hours..
    cheers..

    Hi jaybee,
Yep mucking about in the tinny was a heap of fun, but walking out to the now 4th red beacon is still their and very safe, but when the tide turns, you gotta walk a little bit quicker till you get back to the 1st beacon!

Drifted around the point, needed to pick the day though as the netters run through most early mornings. Picked up some nice duskies and was 'bricked' a few times by something with razor teeth! Not tailor, got a bit of a look seemed to wide in the body for tailor. Watched one person fishing from the shore near the rocks in about 3ft and picked up a small barra which he then let go again. The netters and pro's don't make much of an impact as far as we could see, they do work Dundowran which is a shame as it seemed to be a bit of a nursery area.

if the netters (pros) are the decendents of the guys when my old man was up there you will probably find that they only take what they need to make a living not a killing. It was one area when it was just a little sleepy fishing village where they beleived in looking after their future. Talking of barra..i have lost whiting right at the side of the boat to them..not real big ones but its a sight to see.
