Offshore fishing report
hey guys
mackmauler picked me up at 4:30am this morning for a great day out on the water. We got on the water and headed over to our 'spot'. We got there rigged up and threw them overboard. Then suddenly rob shouted 'look over there' so I looked but nothing was there then suddenly a small dolphin fish leapt into the air. That got my heart pounding. I wound in quickly and started searching the water with my eyes there must have been 50 down there in a school just swimming about I chucked the bait near them he had a look and not sure but I don't think he took it. Anyways to make this shorter ill get to the bit I do remember..
We changed rigs to some lure and immediately got hits although 90% of them spat the lures out. Then Rob had an idea, to try the lures with a single hook instead of trebles.
What a fantastic idea we kept pulling them in. All in all we must have caught about 14 at least but only landed 6
thanks again rob for a great trip mate
cheers jack
p.s rob caught 4 I caught 2 but we had half each and my biggest was about 65cm and 800grams gilled and gutted

Re: Offshore fishing report
Hey Jack, Tell me are those Mahi Mahi good eating?...I know they put up a struggle when hooked.
Did you and Mac go out to the wave rider bouy off point lookout?
What were the swell conditions?..read on the net it was 1.5 and decreasing.

Re: Offshore fishing report
hey brent
mate, mahi mahi are fantastic eating. Like you said for their size they put up a brilliant fight with jumps and all one fish rob caught jumped twice before spitting the lure out and he caught 4 fish in a row and all of them spat the lure. Should have brought a tape recorder
cheers jack
p.s not sure if that wad the buoy but the current was running through at about 3 knots.

Re: Offshore fishing report
Jesus Jack you get out more than me now and I've got two boats.
Bloody school holidays - they should be banned.
Good to see you're having a great time. They are great fun those dolphins. We had a school sit under us off the Gold Coast one day and we threw everything we had them for about 20mins - baits, lures bloody hand grenades - nothing. Then while floating down a half pillie one picked it up then the place went ballistic for about 30 mins.
It was like someone turned on a switch and they would smash anything that went into the water including bare hooks. Then all of a sudden they just stopped. Stayed in the same spot under the boat - you could still bloody see them but they wouldn't touch a thing and after about an hour they moved off.
It was one of the best 30 mins of fishing I've had.
Brent - They do eat well. We cooked them whole on the BBQ with a tropical salsa dressing - fantastic. Didn't freeze that badly either.
Jack - how far past Point Lookout did you go - I guess we really should be asking macmauler.

Re: Offshore fishing report
They certainly like floating objects, you can get em anywhere at times I've got a couple of bulls at e1 off tangalooma, its a shame the game clubs don't put fads out as they do off perth, we were at the waverider with a few others, the charters will struggle bottom bashn this weekend in the deeper water if this current keeps up, Rob

Re: Offshore fishing report
Mackmauler,
Thanks for that. Do you leave from Cleveland. The reason I ask is I've actually tried to work out what distance it would be for me to travel from Cleveland out through South Passage and out to that area (Cathederals etc). Do you know by chance.
I've worked it out to around 35-40km which is a bit far for me - if I want to get back. Can't handle the fuel consumption. Only time I've fished there in my boat was when we took her on the barge to straddie and beach launched on Flinders - but now the barge is so bloody expensive that's almost ruled out now as well.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Offshore fishing report
Giday Brett....Mate we went out on Saturday morning to try and find the wave rider but got within 3 klms and turned back....the sea was pretty lumpy the further south we went.....waves were crashing over flatrock.
To answer your questions about distance im not sure but we left from Raby Bay in the cruisecraft 625 with a 150 yammy and we used 60 litres of fuel to the not quite wave rider bouy return.
Complete waste of time trying to fish out there...that current was racing!!!!!

Re: Offshore fishing report
Hi Rob...Mate you must be keen to get out there in those conditions.....I like to enjoy myself when i go offshore.....We had 2 whales pay us a visit for 15 minutes or so and that was my highlight for the day.
1 of them did some acrobatics launching itself out of the water.
We fished around the red bouy;s in the Rous and caught ourselves a feed of spottie mackerel and tailor.
It was amazing the difference between the conditions inside and outside the bar.
Good bit of experience for us crossing the bar for the second time.
i'm sure we will get out and catch a feed of mahi mahi soon.
