Did the run out off Bribie Sat morning hoping for some early Mac Tuna action. A few schools of small fish (1kg rats) were spotted and spun up on small slugs. They were feeding on the smallest of bait - about 1.5cm long and as would have it I didn't have a fly that looked even close.
After a bit of fun on the light gear we ventured to the channel markers in search of some mackeral maybe. Well the word was out and 1 marker had 5 boats around it the other close by had 3 boats. I opted to run further north. Came up on the marker slow and spyed some largish pelagics hanging in the current. Slipped up current a threw on a small profile baitfish fly. About the 6th cats connect to a small (48cm) kingfish. 8) His big brothers were very wary. 4 fly changes could not get a strike from the larger fish. Dunno maybe wasn't holding my mouth right or something ???
Noticed alot of brown scum looking stuff on the water. Aces of the stuff. Anyone else see this at the weekend?? I had a closer look and to my blind eyes they looked like the teeniest little creatures?????????
Wasn't a good day on the fish but hey I wasn't working.
Saw the same stuff in the water last Thursday hanging around the main channel inside of Moreton. First thought it was pollution then thought it was coral spawn but it was a different colour from the usual. Now I'm not sure.
Saw a lot of the brown stuff on the water off the Gold Coast on the weekend. We were out Sat and Sun and saw lots both days. It was fairly general but a couple of times it formed into slicks.
I thought it was some kind of Algea - anyone else know?
Heard some thing on TV about it. Apparently it is to do with all the rain we had. Some type of algae, and is apparently non-toxic. Don't know much more as the attention span at the time was not real good.
hey dave - was i wonder i didnt see ya out there mate!!!
we tracked up along the beach looking for some tunas but nothing, about 9 o'clock came across a few frigates, but stuff them little buggers to much work!
after that cruised over to the wreaks at tangalooma and scored a dart, a red bass, some sort of wrasse and a butterbream on fly.
after that just cruised home - what an awsome day weather wise - wouldnt wish for anything better
that scum - coral spawn forsure - this time of year and the full moon, yukky stuff.
It weren't coral spawn - seen that diving on the Barrier Reef.
Algae of some sort I'm told. It's covering huge areas of the bay. Went to melbourne earlier in the week and could see huge patches along the current lines from the air.
