Noosa 20-22

Hi all
Just returned from my long weekend at Noosa. The place is just made for tinnys! It spent the weekend tied up to a jetty across the road. You gotta love just stepping aboard and taking off.

Enough background. First thing I noticed was that are heaps of herring in the river. Had no trouble catching a couple of dozen in the cast net with just a few throws each time we went fishing. Fished with these around the sandbanks between Munna Pt and the mouth of the river. Saturday arvo fished the bottom of the tide and caught a bream under the Munna Pt bridge, a flathead on the drop-off next to a sandbank and a trevally just on dark at slack water. The trevally were hitting baitfish on the surface of the water and nailed the first herring we threw at them. Only problem was that it was also our last herring and so we had to pack up and leave with all this fish jumping around.

We went back to the same spot this morning but missed the turn of the tide and the tidal flow was too strong to fish. Also serious boat traffic meant it just was not practical to fish there.

Instead we anchored the dart on the shallow side of a sandbank, got out of the boat and fished along the drop-off with the tide running over the top of the bank. There was a big school of herring sheltering against the edge of the bank. Caught half a dozen flathead (and a tailor) in about an hour and a half and left them biting. The flathead were taking the herring almost at our feet. Most times you would see them hit the bait.

Had my crab pots in and caught a few feeds of sandies. Went up the river to the start of the first lake targeting muddies, but did not catch any bucks. Lots of jennys and a couple of really biguns , but none we could take home.

It was great not having to worry about the wind strength and having a rough ride home. Felt sorry for you guys fishing Wello etc. All in all a terrific weekend.

Just returned from a week at noosa myself and the fishing was pretty good. Like argo said, thousands of baitfish around. I caught lots of bream at this little spot i found also plenty of flathead, moses perch, trevally, jacks and big gar.

Used mainly herring and biddies for bait and bought 1 pack of prawns for the whole week cos i missed the tide to pump yabbies and did good on them with a mate down in weyba ck, even caught a pelican on a herring.

On saturday i was fishing opposite munna pt camp ground near the drop off on the sandbank, had a few prawns out for 3 legal bream and a live herring out on my overhead hoping fora nice flattie, well all of a sudden it went off and i picked it up and this fish took bout 80m of line out of the abu. This run was fast and i had the drag set to nearly full after about 50m of line had gone and this fish took another 30m like it wasn't even there! I was using 20lb platyus pretest so it was something pretty big. Then a boat run over it so i was yelling at them and they got it off for me > > > then i found it was still there so wind in a bit more and lose a bit more before a bloody hoon in his tinny runs over it and cuts the line > > > . I liken the run to that of a nice mackeral, ony thoughts on this?

All in all a good week except for heaps of weed on the incoming tide >. There was heaps of sandies and i got a good feed of them to 8)

Lachie, Id put my money on a golden trevally as the escape, there is a few around this time of year in these areas, I've caught them near the co-op at moloolaba, up around the mouths of the lakes are some great threadfin, don't think they come down as far as munna pt, they run hard. Be an even better river if the trawlers left it alone.
