Went out Mon 1300 from fishermans island with Wes. Headed out to the four beacons and jigged up some big yakkas (about a foot long!). And then headed north. Going along and some major bird action around M6-M8. Dropped a ballooned yakka and within 5 minutes we were on. After about 15 minutes 18kg Longtail to the boat (below). Wes dropped in a livie and had a hookup as he was letting out line. Unfortunately his line popped in the main line after a few seconds - ?mackeral. Getting late, so we headed home, but came across a tight school trashing trough bait. Ive never seen them feed so hard, and were literally a rod length away from a couple of minutes. No hookup on fly
With fishing this good, I headed out by myself the next day. Rough conditions with seas at least 1.5 and wind 20kts with spray of the tops of waves. Had lots of fun trying to jig baits and only managed a handful of small yakkas. Went up to middle beacons, no bird action. Drifted baits for about 30 minutes, but the weather was turning ugly so headed back. Just north of Tangalooma, birds were working hard with large fish working underneath. 10+ schools of large longtail feeding HARD on inch long bait. Broke in the 12KG spin outfit with a couple 14 kg Longtail on slugs. Had to leave as the weather worsened.
Great looking fish George, And a top photo, Would of liked a photo of Bugman the other day after his bustoff from one of those for a stark comparison Great to see some good fishn in the bay for a change.
Northern bluefin/Longtail tuna (Thunnus tonggol) are not bad eating if you bleed them immediately and ice them down. I guess this applies to most fish.
They are great as sashimi or sushi. Or BBQ rare.
Safcol advertise they can them. I have not found where they source them. I hope Longtail tuna don't became a "commercial" species. They are such an excellent sportfish.
