    Wello Report 23-3-03

Hi There Folks..Jimmy and i fished Wello Reef this morning from 5-30am till midday.....The fishing was slow all day with squire up to 30cm and a couple of 28cm sweetlip. encountered...all returned of course. We managed 1 nice 17.5 cm sandcrab to take home.
Baits used were fresh mullet strips , pillies and whole small squid.
The weather was overcast to start with then around 7am the sun appeared...Wind was 10 knots from the southwest then shifted to the northwest and decreased to 5 knots by midday.
A great day to be out on the bay but maybe we need to wait till all the fresh water has cleared before venturing out again.
    Cheers Brent

Fished Green Island on Sunday morning untill low tide. Caught only Shovel Nose Rays and undersized squire.

Then went to Mud Island after the tide turned and caught a couple of nice parrot on prawns.

    Very nice.

My last couple of friday morning outings to Wello produced much the same result as yours Brent.

Crabs stealing baits have been a problem and they always seem to be just undersize. Might try fishing the night rather than the morning.

Yeah Phil there seem to be quite a few blue swimmers around stealing the flesh baits(mullet there favourite).
March and April are the inbetween months on the bay and by May the fishing for the winter species will fire up....could be a good season after this recent rain we have had...lets hope so.
My fishing buddy and myself are going to do a bit of fresh water fishing just until the water temp drops then its back to hit those squire and bream.
Pity this year the bigger sweetlip were'nt around in numbers...maybe the lack of rain early in the year had something to do with this.
Phil let us know if ya do ok fishing Wello during the night.
    Cheers Brent

PS good to hear you caught a nice feed of parrot Charlie.....location around Mud? east, west, north , south
    just currious mate.

    Re: Wello Report 23-3-03

    Hi Charleville,
Green you are limited to you options, with mainly the channel between king and green, up the eastern side, and a little on the top, the structures around green are limited, and youll find a lot smaller species then mud.
Muds is fishable on all sides, with the big three bream/squire/sweetlip habiting all sides, since the coral extraction finished there seem to be a better quality of fish habiting the areas around mud, mainly due to the very irregular bottom left by the dredges, if you run up the eastern side midway, you can actually see on your sounder the deep ravines left by the drag lines, not a bad spot.
Plus theres a abduncance of bait avaliable around the island.
The shallows of mud fish best early am and of a evening, yet from the 5-6m contour out you can hookup to some reasonable fish during full sun.
Full rundown of mud coming up in may b&b.
Heading out this weekend with a few others if you want to tag along, leaving sat arvo.
    regards

    Evening Webby,
I have been following the posts re fish at Mud. I am from the northside & generally don't get down that way but I am tempted. Where is the best place to launch & what is the security aspect for vehicles & trailers left overnight?
    ROLL TIDE, ROLL.................

    Regards,
    Peter

    Re: Wello Report 23-3-03

There are several places to launch from,

The Boat Passage near Whyte Island on Port Drive, Lytton. Security.....average. Ramp....good ( has toilet and tap )

Pinkenba Boat Ramp ( easiest from nth side ) on Kirra St, Pinkenba.
    Security....good, Ramp....average to bugga.

Manly Boat Harbour, Trafalgar St, Manly. My fav for overnighters.

    Security.....good, ramp....good

All the above are about the same distance to Mud. ( give or take a couple of k's )

No good trying to follow Webby out, he travels nothing under 60kph

    Just gaggin !

If you use the Pinkenba Ramp, it's a bugga as there is no shore to land on, have to leave your boat on the ramp to retreive. When a tug or boat passes, your boat'll end up 10ft up the ramp . Take a deckie !

Hi Peter, If your coming from the nthside use the pinkemba ramp, have a chat with Barry Grey he own the tackle store come bait shop and takeaway, for a small fee he will look after your car and trailer for the night.
Just tell him you spoke to me.
You just have to watch this ramp a low tide, greasy as a pig bum.
You can walk your rig to mouth side of the ramp as theres a sandy beach , not real deep though.
otherwise its whyte is, since council did a bit of work there, the thugs dont seem to hang around as much.
But its like any isolated ramp you take the chances.
But if i were you i would go to pinkemba.
Buy the looks of the wx shes going to be a beaut w/end.
Why not tag along, should be about 4 rigs going, depends if Phill takes the tub or the tank
    regards

Thank you for your prompt replies. Manly it is. What VHF channel do you monitor & a C/S would be handy. I am going to the DPI on Friday so will introduce myself there.

    Webby,

Thanks for the invite re Saturday arvo. Unfortunately, I have been organised by the women in my household to do something else at that time but will probably go out early Sunday.

What you have said about the ravines left by draglines at Mud explains what I saw on the sounder. The profile seemed too rectangular to be natural.

It was around such a trench that I caught my parrot.
