    Back o Green

calm conditions, not enuff current to stir things up tho, plenty of grassies to 30 cm, heaps of small moses perch, plenty of small squire to 23cm, pike in plague proportions, two keepers 1 bream and an unknown, which has markings of a cross between a parrot and grassie, shape like a parrot, lips like a morwong but not real thick, and very small, crushing like teeth. If i'm still alive tomorrow night you will know it was okay to eat. Lost one crab pot and a new landing net. Met peterbo3, nice to meet you pete maybe next time we can catch something more decent to bring home.
    cheers.

could have been a Blackall - come in a wide variety of styles - most common I see is a bronze colour with bluey green dots - quite morwong like - get em lots around the rocky headlands of straddie & moreton - big ones are similar to being connected to a runaway bus. Good on the chew but have to be filleted & skinned fresh. Will taste like absolute crap if frozen whole.

found out what it is chris, a spotted hind. Apparantly they use to be quite a common catch out there many years ago, also found out that pike are quite good eating with a texture and flavour similar to whiting. oh well was going to keep em for bait but threw am all back for another day.
    cheers.

Got to agree with JB. The usual vermin & small critters. But at least it was terrific weather.

After a little research here is what i have come up with, its an exact match colour and markings plus counted the anal and dorsal fins, also told a top chewing fish

Cephalopinidae or hinds are another subgroup within the grouper family. The Bluelined hind is easily recognised by the blue spots on the snout and maxilla with blue lines radiating from the eye running lateraly along the body and extending into all fins. Body colouration may vary from pale to dark brown. Generally found on sheltered reefs often in silty areas. Grows to 34cm.

    jaybee,

they call the ones we catch on Straddie a spotted hind, a name I was told years ago. That is obviously a bluelined hind in the pic, a much more colourful fish. What's the source you are looking at ?

Can you see if Blackall is a common name used in their grouping. I thought they were a Blackall because they definitely aren't a morwong & fit the vague descriptions I've read for Blackalls in text. I've go no idea basically (my wife was right afterall) just gueses.

The straddie spotted hind grows much larger than 34cm - is that measurement for the bluelined hind - they are very nice to eat but as I said skin em.

    chris

best bait is 4 or 5 pippis on a 4/0 7766 held on with a triangle of squid.

    Hey Jaybee,

I wouldn't be too concerned about not catching much, I mean things could be worse.

You could be stuck in bloody Bombay for 3 months - no fishing - no family -polluted to buggery and the worst slums I've ever seen.

Last week I saw a 3 year old-ish girl with a baby on her hip - both in tattered loin cloths - begging for money - makes you wonder about the world.

Anyway, enough whinging, at least I've got work. Go get some big ones for me...........
and post some pictures will ya !!!! That's the closest I'll get to a fish for another 2 months or so.
