    Southport Broadwater 12/6/03

    G'day

I fished from the beach out the front of the Broadwater Tourist Park between 4-6pm.

I had tried to catch something from the beach for the previous three days but despite quite a few bites I was unsuccessful in landing anything. I had been using size 1 suicide hooks and nothing was getting hooked.

I went and bought some extra long shank size 6 hooks and decided to give them a go.

It was a bit of a mixed bag! 3 bream (biggest was just legal at 23cm), a small sand whiting (15cm), a 30cm flathead, a sand crab (about 12cm across) which I managed to foul hook through the back of it shell, a striped trumpeter and what I think was a juvenile snapper (about 15cm, it was silvery in colour, had red tinged dorsal and anal fins, and a number of blue spots behind its eye and across its back below the dorsal fin). Is it possible to catch juvenile snapper in the Broadwater?

All fish and the crab were released.

The moral of the story? As an old boss of mine used to say "If you do what you have always done you get what you have always got".

    Regards

    Cubesy

P.S. I have now caught a number of small trumpeter, which I have thrown back. There is no regulations relating to these fish as far as I can tell. Can they be used as a live bait (e.g. for flathead)

Cubesy.. Squire or juvenille snapper are common around the broadwater....i recall a few years ago someone caught snapper there after a week of flooding rain.

    Cubsey,

I'd also be interested to know if anyone has had any success with Trumpeters for live bait. I have tried them quite a few times in both QLD and SA for snapper and never had any success at all. However if you read the section in Grants Guide to Fishes re Trumpeters, Mr Grant states that Trumpeters are a good live bait.

    Anyone got any information?

    Cheers,

    Smerl
