The fishing the week before the full moon (couple of weeks ago) got better as the tides grew. The grunter were on the chew but none of any size were around early in the week. The best effort was an afternoon session behind a large sandbar near the mouth at the start of the run in. My brother caught over 15 legal fish, 7 of which were grunter up to 45 cm long, the rest trevally and queensfish. My girlfriend and I managed 4 grunter, all around 45 cm or just over plus a swag of GT's and Queenies. We left them biting too. Some of the best fishing was to be had just off the huts where we were staying, a lot of charter boats pulled up there all week. Among the many fish we caught off our jetty, a 50 cm Jack was probably the highlight.
Not many crabs were about with only 7 legal ones being caught for the week. Interestingly a small crocodile tested the table qualities of one of our milk carton floats and put several puncture holes in it causing it to sink. We managed to recover the pot. Another one only a couple of hundred metres away was mauled by a much larger specimen and has been retired. In hindsight we should have taken a photo. I'll take one before we dump it.
Cheers, Mark
