    Hacking around Straddie

    G,Day

On account of the last ABC Hacks and Hasbeens Tailor Preservation Society annual Straddie migration being blown out by Huey #> a follow up visit was in order.

All the boys left on Monday morning and will return Saturday morning but alas some of us have to work and I went over Monday night and returned last night. (I WANT TO BE RETIRED) #[smiley=bigcry.gif]

Arrived at main beach at 7:40pm to be greeted by a 2.57 metre high and 20-30 knot south easters blowing the waves right up to the dunes. Undeterred and armed with 6 beers under my belt (it's a long ferry trip) and the ever trusty Landy in low difflock headed south the 7.7km to camp. Couple of exciting and wet kilometres later arrived safely to allow the turbo to cool down for half an hour #[smiley=2thumbsup.gif].

Lots of drinks - as normal - until around 12,1,2....am who knows woke up under the main tarp in my sleeping bag at 6:00am and went for a fish. Tried some gutters north of us for Bream using mullet flesh. Windy and rough and struggled for two 29cms breambos in about and hour then went back to camp.

After breaky headed to the pin where we got to see the netters shoot the lagoon for a mixed bag of big mullet, massive whiting, big bream, squid, calamari and the odd tailor. Broke my heart. [smiley=bigcry.gif] [smiley=bigcry.gif] but it's their living. Lots of small whiting and bream for us throughout the day but nothing a standout (if legal). Had an late afternoon snack on the beach before rigging for Tailor on dusk. Hard to fish into the wind but I managed 1 49cm specimen until 7:00pm when we gave it up as a bad joke and headed back to camp.

Wednesday - much better conditions at about 5-10 knots and seas under half a metre and got better as the day progressed. Headed north to fish the deep gutters/holes south of Pt Lookout. Good quality bream to about 36-38cm and some good 32-34cm whiting. Numbers weren't high and the bites were very subtle which was too much for some of the crew - especially the older and newer members. Best bait was pippis funnily enough. I was sweetening mine with a bit of sandworm on the top of the hook and up the line which was encouraging better bites. After 2-4 fish was pulled out of the gutter it shut down and we'd have to move to the next one. It was quite funny actually.

I cleaned my catch - attached photo - at 3:00pm and headed back on the 4:30pm barge. There was no wind, bright sunshine and beautiful clear water. WHAT THE HELL WAS I DOING #[smiley=bigcry.gif] [smiley=bigcry.gif].

Boys are still there - fishing and drinking in the beautiful weather - while I'm here dealing with all this shit that's fallen on my work desk in the two days of I''ve had off. #> >.

Here's two of the cars enjoying a light bacon and egg sandwich before preparing for the Tailor session.

This was soon followed by a beer and rum session following a non existent Tailor session.

It gives me the s*%ts to think the pros are allowed to net at the pin, there always netting the poor old Lagoon when I go down. The whole Broadwater should be commerical free.Good to see you had a nice trip. MQ

Oh my God you've seen through my ruse

Actually, I broke his neck so well it was bent back at 90 degrees. Worst thing was his head came off while I was filleting the second side and had to fillet back towards me. I hate that.

    Quinny,

It's the first time I've seen them net the lagoon - I actually could believe the amount of fish in there. You can't blame the pros - they've got a license to catch fish via net and that's what they do. I just hope that sense prevails at Govt level in the near future and they take tailor off the pros' target species list. How good would the fishing on Straddie be then in 5 years time.

Looks like the winds picked up yesterday and today some maybe the guys didn't have the best off the conditions without me anyway.

I think it should be compulsory to get to workdays off once a month and hit the the sands of Straddie

    Follow-up

The boys fished the same gutters on the Thursday but a lack of low water had the surf a touch rougher making it hard to feel the subtle bites apparantly. Personally I think it was a lack of skill.

Another mixed bag was landed but numbers were down on the day before. However biggest bream for the trip was landed at 39cm. Also a few flatties thrown if for variety. Biggest was 64cm caught on a pippi. They fished the pin for Tailor again that evening and failed to get a bite.

Friday was rough so they headed down the pin for some small bream and whiting but I think they were more wasting time than anything and needed a change of location to drink.

Back home Saturday as the winds picked up.
