Not here to make a comment about the subject... just here to say that I have seen a couple of your writeups in the Mag & if I knew you were such a top fisherman when I worked on the bench with you at Mayne a few yrs back.. I would have snavvelled a trip out with you...
I'd imagine the shark would be much better off than a Marlin or large Tuna that's had to fight for it's life for 1/2 hour or so before it was dragged in, and then punched with a tag before it was let go. The argument here seems to be directed toward the welfare of the shark. Greenies will be concerned for it's welfare and I believe a shark dragged up the beach by a wire rope (with what seems to me to be a reasonably small amount of blood coming from it's mouth considering the size of the beast), would stand a better chance of surviving than one that's completely exhausted with it's lactic acid and other waste product levels have built up to an extreme concentration in it's blood from fighting for so long.
I think the arguments here are differing opinions. Am I right? Angling with light gear is fun for us but let's face it, if you or I had to fight tooth and nail until we finally gave up, we'd have a bloody good rest after it. On the other hand, if big Arny Schwartznegger dragged us up by the scruff of the neck, when he let us go, we'd still have plenty of reserves to bugger off in a hurry, hence more chance of evasion from a predator and we'd recover quicker (despite the brown stain in our jocks).
I dunno if I'm on the right track here, but I see the 'skull-dragging' method to be more shark-friendly.
gee snapper i wouldnt let it worry you unless u have a conscience, most of the posts including mine were i believe on the sportsmanship side of things. would be a different story if you caught the animal off the beach with a rod and reel. But then i spose you will say you would have tired it out and it would have died, methinks not eh. Now from another perspective if you were in your boat fishing for snapper and this fine specimen come along, would your gear have held up... my guess is no. So don't let it worry you. People are only saying they believe you did the wrong thing (free speach and opinions of which we are all entitled to). On another note, if you search the web you will find sport fishing from the beach using 4wd. The people involved use the same rigs you would use on a charter boat out from cairns (130kg). But! they use the bullbar of the 4wd for their rods and game seats and do battle that way, and more often and not lose. (they get busted of or the fish is fought to death) so who is in the wrong. And last but not least i am an avid reader of bush n beach, have read of your catch rates and have thought about joining the said club you are in. However, this post has deterred me from doing so, as i have lost respect for the person. my opinon only and does not reflect on anybody else associated with this chat board. Also i will not be replying to anymore posts on this thread as I have said my piece, but if you would like to contact me through pm you are more then welcome. Because respect can be earned. Oh i forgot what you said about my photo, what self respecting parent would let their child take their kitchen table and outboard and try if for a boat.
cheers
joe.
Without getting involved in the "good catch/ bad catch" discussion going on here......the shark with the toothy grin on the beach looks to me to be one of the Whaler's. Probably a Bronze Whaler but if someone wants a second guess I'll have a harder look!
The guys who wouldn't want to come across this fella in the water might be a little surprised how often they "pop in" for a look at what's going on and people don't know they are there....probably a good thing! Spent some time snorkelling in Wistari Channel - Heron Island a while back and you get pretty used to the Reef Sharks popping in to say G'day....on the other hand the 3m Lemon Shark that decided to cruise past me one day was a different kettle of fish altogether. Anyone else ever had the cold sweats underwater?!
