Talking of big shovel nose sharks i caught one around one of the beacons in the bay this time last year and it was the length of our boat 15ft long fought it for over an hour and half thinking it was another big cobia!!....Not happy jan!
I was out fishing at fitzroy island once with one of my mates. There was a number of tuna swimming around just past our casting range, so we waded out, hooked on a livie each, and were madly trying to get a shot away at these tuna. It was when we were both up to our underarms that someone yelled "shark!!" We both laughed it off, until saw a dark shape coming towards us(we both thought it was bout 20ft, but turns out it was only bout 6ft, scary tho!!!). WELL!!! I tell you what! Were both fairly beefy blokes, but there was no way we were going to let a little bit of water stop us from reaching the sure. We were out running on the water before we knew what was happening. Turned out to be the resident shovel nose coming to see what all the fuss was.
Sure made us move tho!!!!
Very impressive animals!

i caught a 4" shovel nose shark on 20lb line. took me about 20 - 30 mins to get in.
the real fun started when i hooked a 5 footer on 12lb line on an overhead. 30mins later and the 40lb nylon trace finally rubed through.. oh well... easy release. at once stage it was within 10m of us.
If you were land-based you should have tried the Steve Irwin matey (and I don't mean anything regarding 1 month old kids ). I saw a guy do that and get thrown about a bit, he wasn't a big guy, but he was very strong. Looked like a real riot, those things are just monstrous
