Killer Golden
Gday all, went to Burrum Heads last week for a holiday and had a great time up there, we braved some really ordinary weather (25nt winds) to make to journey from urangan to the magical areas in the inside of fraser past moon pt. We had planned a day of mostly chasing birds and throwing slugs at the surface fish as we find it more fun than just trolling. So armed with a few flatty outfits with 3kg braid and some killer slug rigs we set out. Saw our first set of birds about 3k north of moon pt, sure enough the spotties were smashin up a small bait patch, so after a few bite offs (not me, i was smart enough to use light wire) we managed to boat a few. With the weather turning pretty ordinary after 3-4 hours we were about at arch cliffs when the decision was made to troll a mixture of spoons, bibbed, and soft plastic lures. after a couple of spotties , we got the third hookup trolling through some rather hesitant bird action... i picked up my dunger overhead (this thing is from the 50's im sure...) with 9kg line on it, and was expecting another spotty when boom the weight hit me. This was no spotty, but it wasnt a spainiard either, it seemed to stay as close to the bottom as possible and give a couple of unstoppable runs every now and again. After 45 mins without seeing the bloody thing, we finnaly got a glimse at it , a nice bit trevor! at this stage i panicked a bit worrying my catch of the trip may get hit by a shark if i'm not carful, finnally after 1 hour we managed to boat a beatiful 12kg golden trevally. It was a great reward after an hour of fighting it. I would have been spewing if it was a noah.
One amazing thing we dont have the luxury of on the gold coast is the urangan pier, the first time i walked out on this thing we saw at least 4 6-10kg broad barred macs cruising the pilons and smashing up bait. It must be heaven to have this in your backyard. Unfortunalty we had no rods and had to watch these big bruisers cruising past... torchure i tell ya.
Anyways if you get the chance hit that area, the fish life is amazing and so is the scenery.

Re: Killer Golden
Yeah i have a 4.5 mtr profish with a 60 efi merc, its a bloody good rig, i'm so glad i chose it. You get wet in rough weather but if your in an open boat in 25nt winds you have to expect it. I love the room and the casting deck, it was so good to fight the fish from there.

Re: Killer Golden
Nice rig mate, Trailcraft profish is my fav Tinnie, went within a whisker of buying a 5.3m Profish (not sure if my poor old Ford could tow it).
I'm sure you will have years of fun with that boat.
Did you buy it from Cunningham's Marine at Redcliffe ?
Cheers

Re: Killer Golden
Yeah they were pretty good there, i found if you get quotes from other places and try to get the best deal out of both of them it works a treat. They have some nice tinnies there, the 6.4m centercabin would be awesome... one day

Re: Killer Golden
Hahah, thanks DC bast#!rd....
The problem i had was trailcraft dont fit a bilge pump so things got a bit more difficult, and there is no way to bail the sealed underfloor...
I am waiting on a photo of the trevor just after we caught it, if its good i'll update and post it here.

Re: Killer Golden
JB,
We've installed a manual bilge pump (in addition to the existing electric bilge) in my plate center console "Sherm" after the lastest refit. When the sh&t really hits the fan you don't have to rely on flooded batteries.
I personally could not bring myself to killing a Golden Trevally. I love catching them too much, and I want to catch them again when they are even bigger. But each to their own.
Wes
