    Jims mack hunt  Round 2...

    Gday Fellas,
Well we went mack huntin this morning.I was full of enthusiasm with all the info passed on to me by u guys.
Started wit a simple rig .gar with a tu tu and a large lure the fishin shop said was dangerous to macks.
The others had various rigs including the local spinner bait set ups.and a large bonito full of hooks.
Went about 2km.seen a few birds workin etc no hits..
Then some galah in a nice shiny boat decides to cut across our stern with the end result of 3 rods screaming their guts out and knives flashing as they were cut off.
If anyone knows the owner/driver of a ship called " RACHAEL" could you ask him to return our gear and about 350 metres of braid. It would be good if someone could give him a few tips on driving behind boats that are obviously trolling.........
Back to plan B and re rigged the lines travelling down to Sunshine way.Seen a huge flock of birds and trolled beside them, thru them and over them with no results.
On the return trip we got 1 hit and landed a nice Spaniard about 12kg.
Im not sure 6 hours of trolling is my cup of tea but ill give it a few more goes before i throw the hands in the air.Maybee if it was on my line i would have been more excited..at least i got to gaff him.
Thanx to all those who offered advise it was much appreciated

a 12kg spaniard is nothing to be sneezed at for a mornings fishing! some days youll get hits left right and center and other days you will struggle to get a touch, but hey... thats fishing!

    Jim,
Haven't been offshore for macks but was just wondering about the size of the baits or lures you were using. Sounded like they were generally on the large side from your report.
One thing I was told for tailor spinning is that you do a lot better if you match the size of the slug or spoon to the size of the bait the school happens to be feeding on at the time. ie if they are feeding two inch whitebait, chucking a 6 inch raider with another inch of treble on the back, is just going to look unnatural to them.

I noticed mackmaulers infamous slugs weren't real big (certainly a lot smaller than a whole bonito full of hooks ). The longest ones aren't real big and he also made smaller ones.

The mack lads will know better on this though.

    Cheers,
    Jeff

hey jeff, when chasing spaniards and big mackeral that arnt working on the surface the bigger baits work very very well. tailor, pike, bonito, mac tuna, ribbon fish (wolf herring) and slimies work a treat.

Jeffo, it was just a thought.
As I said, you mack lads would know better.
But hang on, you're Mackless in Moloolabah at the moment, aren't you?

    None taken.
All the advice you regularly contribute on various subjects is getting stored in (whats left of) my grey matter for when I get the oppertunity to do some offshore stuff myself.
Hope the macks don't wait until you are on the your trip north before they decide to visit Mooloolabah.
    Cheers,
    Jeff

Jim where did you go mack hunting??

I went out from gold coast seaway on sunday but came up with a big fat zero did some livey fishin at mermaid and then some higher speed trolling but only came up with a small thrasher shark (i think thats what type it was). A huge rainstorm came through and made it bloody uncomfortable out there.

    Gday Fellas,
Interesting noone knows the good ship "Rachael" i guess it was a terrorist on his first trip in a new boat!!!
We used a variety of baits from pillys up to bonito. The school of bait I mentioned were only small and small fish working on them.
We were fishing off noosa over the Jew shoals(Keeping the required distance from the dive boat) I wonder how it would feel with a set of 8/0 hooks in the body? I guess they don't think about it!!! Sorry to digress!!!! WE worked down sunshine reef and back home
One fish is better than none, i guess it coulda been my line but most of it is hanging on thre prop of the good ship Rachael

Maybee next time the eternal optimist~~~
