Colleges crossing is where i got my mullet from with the cast net and found out recently that cast netting in freshwater is illegal so i catch them myself
hey jewie
im guessing your setting up at freshwater and not a saltwater system...?
alot less work....haha
or should i rephrase that...are you planning on catching your own jack for the tank or buying a freshy...?
This got the better of me and I contacted the DPI and was told that as long as it was down stream of the old wier then a cast net at Colleges Crossing was ok.
Mad keen i find my saltwater tank is far more aesier to look after and just as easy to setup!! Dont listen to all the so called experts they tell you all this info thats not needed....Very simple process!! A little more costly but easier to look after.....The simple reason is that very little algae compared to freshwater which is really good!!
ok all sounds good looks like my next ten kilo snapper will be in my tank!! ....I dont think so!!....My try that maybe a few grinners too.!! Will they eaat my clownfish?? Prolly eat them in two secs flat i reckon!!.....Shit this has got me thinking now!!........I still dont think it sounds right but im sure youve checked it out!! Thanks Bungie
In the brochure put out by the QLD Govt under the DPI banner it says "Coral reef fin fish must not be bought live to shore".
Then when you pen the brochure up it lists Coral reef fin fish then below that, Other tidal species.
Now Mangrove Jack are listed under the "Other tidal species" so I can't see a problem with taking one home for a tank.
Probably best to clear it with the DPI which is what I intend doing as I want to set up a tank.
Stu.
P.S. I think the goldfish idea is brilliant, kill two birds with one fish, so to speak.
ok if there is anything you need to know about the keeping of mangrove jack, cichlids and even marine just ask away! have been heavily involved in the fish sceen for 8 years! i agree totally that marine is far more easier to look after then fresh water if you are needing prices on certain things like external canisters filters ,sumps, pumps, internal filters ect ect food even just ask away i have the best prices in oz
p.s some of you might of remembered the pics i posted of my 72cm jack i had in my 6x2x2 tank! tank is now for sale complete set up just add water and fish nothing to spend really !$450!
if your budget is limited you won't be buying a jack.
Be careful about buying a fish with a large max size, eg barra, murray cod, and jacks. To a much lesser degree, bass. If you feed them well they'll all grow pretty big pretty fast.
If you don't want the glamour, a spangled perch is a prettier fish than a jack, and would cost (much) less than 10% of the price. But, it won't draw blood when it bites your fingers as you clean the front glass.
Jacks learn to eat dead food fairly quickly, especially when the water is warm.
