    Pimpama River 27 - 28 March

Decided to fish the Pimpama overnight Saturday in an attempt to keep out of the wind and catch some muddies. Fat chance on both counts. Spent most of the time fishing at 90 degrees to the current and almost a complete waste of time on the crab and fish front. First fish was a 37cm tailor on a live herring within 30 minutes of getting there (a real surprise to find it this far into the system) and that was it for the legal fish.

Have fished there O/N previously and at least caught a feed of flathead, whiting and bream in amongst all the catfish. However, on Saturday night even the undersized bream and catfish were few and far between, with the majority of the excitment (only excitment) being provided by a reasonably constant stream of pike eels ranging from 1 - 2 m long. I constantly lived in hope that one might have been a jew given I was fishing the edge of the deep hole off Diamond Head, but it was not to be.

To make it worse, come morning the pots were empty and baits untouched with the exception of an undersize sandy. Fortunately during the night I had managed to wind in and net two legal sized muddies who grabbed mullet baits - at least some consolation.

    Cheers

Maccaril - Moved around a bit as the tide allowed - gets really shallow in places, but only around the red beacons at the Stockyards, the hole on front of the mansion, along the bank & around the beacons as you head towards the mouth. Didn't try the oyster racks (too shallow when I was down that way) and haven't been up to the weir at Kerkin (??) Rd yet. I've got Nugget's info on the Pimpama and the weir may well be the go at some stage in the future as I have'nt had a lot of luck elswhere in the river (unless you could the the pike eels I've caught, some up to about 3.5m in length using 40lb gear).

Any hints on fishing the river would be welcome as it is my closest option and not too choppy when windy.

    Cheers

    Thanks Rob

I've heard that high tide early evening at the weir is a good land based spot for jacks & other ambush predators.

    Cheers
