A mate and I went out Saturday chasing the prawns. Left Jacobs Well and had a few exploratory cast for little result before getting to the spot Nugget mentioned last week (opposite the mouth of the Logan). Tried here a few times throughout the day (as did many other boats) but only got a few - plenty of shell and grit though!

Got a few on the southern point of the Logan entrance - even managed to attract a few other boats which makes me laugh as all I know about prawning can be written on the back of a coaster. Got talking to a bloke who heard the "Lagoons" had a few. After studying an aerial photo we started heading to the prawn(?) farm (they look like lagoons on the photo) but on the way noticed a few boats casting in the creeks beside Lagoon Island and assumed this was the actual Lagoons. Got a few good catches along the banks. After speaking to a few others they said the prawns were there about 10.30 that day - late again!

Eventually started heading homea and tried the ever reliable banks between Rudy Maas and Jacobs Well. As the sun started to set we got good catches (for us anyway) in around 2.5 metres of water. Got 1.5 kilos in abut 30 mins before the midgies carried us away and we didn't have any torches so couldn't see what was in the net. Ended up taking home 2.5 kilos - no cricket score but not bad for a couple of beginners. Managed a 60cm flattie in the net which ended up adding to a good feed.

Keen to hear other results from the weekend.

i saw you out there Michael , we did about the same saturday ...just a couple of Kilo .
Got a few BIG prawns around the pylons to the power lines , but only a few .
Most were caught just inside the mouth of the river and in the redland bay channel .
Mostly small buggers , but it was hard to find them without a depth sounder ....damn hire boats >

My new launch will arrive in just over 3 weeks [smiley=thumbsup.gif]...can't wait !!

How much longer will the prawns be around for ??? will they still be there in a month ? This is the first time i have actually chased them in the bay

yep all gone tasted good, nothin like eating ya catch

when they are spread right out they are hard to find. Alot of the blokes on both days were doin the run from redland channel- st clair/pannikin- karra area's then back. I always give the karra , w's area a work over at nite, get some great tigers. there are some holes along long Is.

Lagoons is on the right(2 entrances) as you head up the logan(near marks rocks-Green can floating) there is a 3way junction deep hole. from there work both banks. houses side always seems better(deeper i spose). mate it is addictive you must always hav a look when somebody is throwing cause you never know.

    Billo
    what boat were you in

thanks for the info - now looking at your boat pic I thnik I saw you go by us a couple of times on Saturday morning when we were at the southern point at the mouth of the Logan?

Looks like I should have followed you - will know for next time

Unfortunately (well not really) going away to Iluka for Anzac weekend so no prawning this weekend, but will definitely be out the weekend before the full moon - do you think this will be one of the better times to get them before the season finishes?

    Re: prawning 17 18 april

Worked the mouth of the Logan on Sunday morning and early afternoon, not much happened until around 11am when all the boats swarmed in. Peak time was probably 12pm - 1pm. Got greasy prawns first and then the bananas started in earnest. Managed a small feed of nice bananas but my bottom pocket mono net simply does not cut the mustard when it comes to prawns. I need to get me a decent top pocket mono net. People that were using them were consistently outperforming those using bottom pocket only nets.

Michael_G, you are not wrong, prawning is totally addictive.

Any suggestions guys? I probably can't afford to go the whole hog with a custom job though.

yep, full always a good go. the are usually schooled up moving out, form what i have expeirenced, but in say that, at this time of year every day is worth a shot. they will somewhere just a matter of finding.

    Cheno

what you could do is buy a Amart net with the top/bottom pocket and untie the bottom. they are good nets for their value.

Michael , i was just in a 12ft hire boat from Carbrook ....all i could do to get out , i had a mate up from SA so i thought we mayaswell hit the water .
It was a hard trek against the tide up and down the river , thank god i won't be doing that anymore !!!

    CQ , getting a 4.35 Seajay SP with a few mods .
Got a full foreward casting deck which will make life easy with the cast net , thats for sure ! 3 weeks till she arrives
