Re: jacob well prawns
This is one species that always seems to confuse - especially Queenslanders.
While we often call it a John Dory - it definitely isn't.
What it is, is a Selenotoca multifasciata - otherwise known as a butterfish or Spotbanded scat (not scad).
Great eating and while some 'experts' claim they grow to 12 inches - I've caught them in a cast net well over a kilo in the Logan River.

Re: jacob well prawns
thankyou Prof Downie (i'm right, i'm right, i'm right - na, na ! )
i've caught them probably one in five trips to a creek that runs thru kalinga bank - a secret spot that no-one else knows about hunting whiting, always on worms I get em never on a yab (when I say never I have probably caught a dozen if that makes my claim statistically inaccurate .... I'm dribbling... )

Re: jacob well prawns
more info on YRC scurge, they are known to have lookouts along waterways to give warning on authoraties coming.they also have little white vans along waterways at public access points(dead end streets, public parks and other fishing spots ect) with "inocent fisher person " waiting for the drop off if coast is clear.these creatures are "highly organised criminals" who will always find a way to get around our SLACK regulation enforcement.this country is a soft touch for them and they know this.yes they do hunt in packs now and if one gets caught all others get away and his loss is nothing to what gets away while authoraties do one bust if he hasnt thrown catch over side and suddenly "no speakey english".last year while this was going on in brisbane river at warves i was pulled up no less than 3 times by 3 different authoraties who did just about everything but x-ray me between boat passage and mouth of river.mabey they are colour blind and cant see YRC or just blind ,you have to wonder.either way each year they get worse and soon they will stuff it up for everyone except them cause they will still do it and get away with it.a conserted effort is needed by authoraties now.
