    Pin Sunday Night 12 - 13 June

Fished the Pin overnight - with 1000's of others - had to park the car & trailer back past the bowls club at Cabbage Tree. Started off on the sandbank at the mouth of Cobby Cobby hoping for some flathead. Managed a couple of undersize flatties and 10 or so diver whiting which I saved/used for live bait.

Got smoked on one whiting, second mauled by a crab and third realised a 1.5m shovelnose - took the photo & released it.

Moved into Cobby Cobby to fish the deep hole overnight - first time I've persisted here. Hoping for a school jew, but in the end anything would have been good. Guy in the boat next to me said he'd got a couple of 3lb squire there on Thursday night. Ended up with 5 bream to 35cm and two legal flatties. Most of the fish actually came from the shallows, not the hole, and all fish were on the turn of the tides when the run had slowed down. Seems to be a prolific spot for eels which kept taking the live baits.

Need to keeplooking to find a consistent spot so I don't have to wait 4 hours between fish bites - any hints welcome. Only redeeming feature was Cobby Cobby is well protected from the wind so it wasn't too cold, although the fog bank that rolled over about 2am made things a bit cool in the tinnie.

    Hi Al,
I went to that hole today (along with 7 other boats ) got sick of the tiddlers and watching the other 7 boats sitting there with no action and moved up along cobby cobby and tried a few other spots with no joy. Yes indeed nice and protected in there. What time did you move from the hole? Wonder if you were one of the 7 that were there around 8.30 this morning? Must admit there were some snodgers showing up on the sounder, unfortunatly blind ones... didnt see my baits
    cheers

lots of very nice whiting up the passage further - i like black moons, flooding tides, creek entrances & banks. If i went up there & saw two boats near the hole I wouldn't bother about jew - its too restricted a waterway & ya gotta be real sneaky in quiet water.

Did you jig up some herring to use too - they are the natural in the hole.

Left the hole at about 7.00am so missed the rush - although there were another 10 boats or so further towards the mouth. Only myself and one houseboat in the hole overnight.

A guy did come through with a cast net on first light - perhaps trying for some of those herring, but didn't see him get a thing. There was a lot of small baitfish activity just after sunset on the last of the run in, but no luck with jigs - didn't try the cast net (should have in hind sight, but wan't sure what was on the bottom). Had to make do with live diver whiting for live bait.

Read one of the later reports re eating/cooking shovel nose - is a 1.5m shovel nose worth keeping for a feed and if yes, how do you prepare them?

    Cheers
