Headed up to Platypus Bay for the weekend to watch the whales and hopefully catch some fish - well got to do both in the end...
Stopped of around the 6 mile early in the morning on the way up and as usual didly squat... oh well, cant complain as we didnt stay long. I casted a few soft plastics out around a bait school.
After setting up camp on-shore we headed out into platypus bay and was lucky enough to land our first snapper of the day. However, at the time of getting the fish in the boat my mate (I can call him that again) put his rod down to help, only to get smashed by a fish and get the rod taken over board. The rod was a wilson live fibre 6-8kg spin stick with a Okuma Epix 60 loaded with 500yards of 30lb fireline... oh well !!
After that debacle we manged to land another 2 before I wound in my line only to discover I was pulling another line up ! Which in the end turned out to be the rod and reel that went for a swim earlier !! The fish was still on the end but due to pulling the line in bare hands I gave it a yank and snapped whatever it was off (had a 3m leader of 6kg), I was much more concerned with getting the rod and reel back !!
Anyway after that smooth sailing with a total of 6 snapper ranging between 4-6 kilo's gilled and gutted. It is interesting to note that all fish were caught on a 6kg Strudwick Spin Rod with a Okuma Epix 30 loaded with 20lb penn braid and a leader of 6kg Platypus Super 100.
When I work out how to get these files into a smaller size I will post them
Forgot to mention that we only kept that many as the guy I took out is staying at Noosa this week with 10 others and they were going to be cooking a few up whole on the BBQ for dinner.
If it hadnt been for this I would have only kept 2 of them.
Good fishing Whiley [smiley=2thumbsup.gif] Were they taken on bait or soft plastics? What bait were you using or what brand/type/colour plastics were you using??
Top catch [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
DC
All taken on 4 * 3/0 gang hooks with pilchards, all baits where unweighted with gangs attached to the leader and no swivel as when the mackerel are thick they bite you off no matter what colour you are using (black or gold).
We would cast the lines out the back and the fish would take care of the rest !!
