JJ's biggest fish to date.......a happy chappy :-)
No flake in the freezer so headed out to Rous from Manly at 6.30 hoping to pull a few shovellies at slack water. No sooner arrived than wind must've started blowing 20 so turned and headed for the shelter of St Helena.
1hrs fishing (7 of us) produced one shovelly going 75 cm, 2 grunters and 2 grinners :-( Wind eased so set off for Mud.
Fished West for an hour pulling 2 more grinners, several undersize squire, a big wobby and 2 keepable whiting (never caught them over coral before?). Wind turned and blew again so headed for east side which produced not a bite in 45 minutes :-(
Kids got bored so I asked 'em if they wanted a bit of sport with stingies and they agreed so set off with wind easing for known stingy haunt.........pulled 7 in 25 minutes with this the first

Then I got into this
Size 10/0 Shaughnessy hook baited with live grinner on 50lb leader and 25lb main line. It went 115 cms and weighed in at 48lb. The scales aren't zeroed but it went just short of round the clock.
Within 5 minutes of boating this the wind picked up again enough to have the anchor dragging against the current! Time to get out of there. Plodded slowly home thankful that the kids had something to show for getting pissed wet through :-)
Amazing how the Paddock can go from glass to over a metre in less than 10 minutes!
Another shot fo the cod.

Bring on the Marlin!!!
Kev,
Awesome fish mate...awesome fish. We've been fishing the bay lately a fair bit for really bugger all return - great to see there's some bigguns lurking around down there still.
One question - you ever eat the rays you catch? I've heard you can but have no idea what they taste like or how one prepares them.
Well done mate.
Ben
Very nice cod there Kev......Remember i have an anchor here that will stop the boat drifting..lol
Hey at least those grinners are good for something.
Its great to see the kids out on the water having fun.
Cheers Brent
G'day kev,
Bloody hell what a fish..
Bet the kids thought that was great.
Glad to see you did well.
Cheers

Cheers Ben. Yes, we used to eat them (still do if there's no other fish in the freezer) but I can't be arsed preparing 'em nowadays. Just take the flaps, skin 'em and cook 'em on the barbie, preferably with a lid over them to keep 'em moist. They're a bit strong but I'm told that if you soak 'em in milk prior to cooking, it tones that down a bit. My feral deckie likes hers done in the oven with a coating of onion rings.......she even eats the bones! If you pour boiling water on the flaps (of the stingray) ;-) then the skin just scrapes off.Originally Posted by Maria

Glad the weather's still too cold for the DT's Kev. Nice fish tho...
Great fish Kev, and like the others have said - fantastic to see the tribe of kidws having fun!! Thats (one of) my big reasons for getting out there - to be with my boys before they get sick of the old mans company!! Many a ray or shovelly has 're-inspired' the boys after a fishless stint! Oh, and I don't mind the shovelly fillets cubed in a curry!!
