    Trout,
Speak to Tony (agnes_jack) about local baitgrounds. I believe they are a fair way offshore. Roz actually brought a heap of slimies (frozen) with her from down in NSW so not sure where you get them from up there. Saw one of the local mackerel pros using live baits to catch his fish, but he seemed to be using yakkas. Our biggest fish actually nailed a pike, so I reckon you could get them on most baits. Garfish, yakkas, slimies, pike and even lures should all net results for you.

    Good luck,
    Herby

Slimies are like hens teeth around here, we do get just the odd one mixed in with the Yakka's in winter, but it is rare to get many.
The Bait grounds are about 1m off round hill head. The yakkas are normally fairly thick out there, but at the moment they have all disapeared.
Any decent bait will catch a mack, as herbie says. The pike can be a top bait and we often use them off the rocks for spanish and longtails. Another one that can work well is the larger size herring slow trolled. These sometimes ball up close to the rocks, or can be cast net near the boat ramp in the early morning most of the time. Yakkas, either dead or alive are the bait used most by the pro mackeral fisherman.

    Regards, Tony
