Hi Dan,
A 15 cm Bream, on 3 gang hook and 30 lb line, so did he put up much of a fight.
Went out Saturday morning at about 8am to the mouth of the Nudgee river. Took a Berkley Drop Shot rod (2-4kg) loaded with 6lb braid, and a 3" minnow (split tail).
Incoming tide, and casting into the channel next to the sand spit. Not too many bites, and kept casting in an arc around where I was standing. About 10 minutes after starting, the softy hooked onto what felt like a few twigs/seaweed... Slowly wound it in with a bit of weight on the line. Pulled it in to about 3ft from the edge, when the twig/weed BOLTED! Played it for a minute, and pulled out a 44.5cm flathead! New Personal Record!!! Into the bag he went!
5 minutes later, pulled out a 37cm flathead from the same spot.... Let him go to get a bit bigger for me to catch later!
Not too many bites after that, and then the tide reached full, so decided to call it a day.
Sunday morning, back out there at 9am with some mates, this time with the drop shot rod, but also with a 10'6 beach rod/5" alvey. Loaded with 15kg mono (Heavy I know!) and running a 3 gang. Hooked a whole pilchard (dead) onto the gang, and cast him into the channel to float around. Flicking the softy around the flats again to see what was there.
20 minutes into it, hooked onto a small flathead (about 25cm or so)... Just as I leant down to pull the hook out, the alvey ratchet starts ringing away! Quickly flicked the hook out and released the flatty, and my mate had grabbed my beach rod. Pulled in a 15cm bream! First double hook up of my life!!!
That's all we got for the sunday. Some of the other guys fishing there were getting dart and little bream, but not much else...
All in all, a damn good weekend of fishing!
