Tuna, Tuna, Tuna and more Tuna

yesterday morning rob, mick and myself went out in search of some yellowfin tuna. the lures hit the water and then the first fish came on board quickly. it was a slow start with only a few yellowfins and mack tuna coming on board. around 7am the tuna began coming on board thick and fast with double and sometimes triple hook ups. rob then hooked on to a decent fish which turned out to be a "small" ??? wahoo which promptly hit the ice. with so much tuna in the boat mick decided that he would try some sashimi. mick didn't like the raw tuna. . i christend my new TLD20 on a few nice yellowfin works very nicely.

we then decided to put the marlin lures out and trolled around for a few hours. this resulted in no strikes but some good sunburn

overall an awesome day, great to catch up with rob and mick again.

    cheers phil

more yellowfin - too boring to take any more photos [smiley=huh2.gif]

So how far out are you getting the 'fin? I kind of gather you are running bibbed minnows - lively blue ones! Is that right?

    Cheers,

    Jeremy

Jeremy, they are taking plenty of lures, but its not worth feeding them pakulas, pilly minnows are a good standby and very strong, fishinmishin used a rapala to good effect for example the day before, can get them jigging, with bait, there not fussy, ive caught them on every lure in the box some days! they are showing on the sounder and rising into the wake, trolling is good fun especially when you get a triple but expect to lose lures! anywhere from just off the nth passage bait ground 70m south east, there north of moreton on the dropoff to, expecting the guys who fished there yesterday will have been into them.

Thanks Rob, I haven't heard of reports of such good numbers of yellowfin for ages (ever?). Is this a spring run, or is it coming into the summer pelagic season, or is it simply just that there are good numbers there now?

    Cheers,

    Jeremy

Yes Jeremy it is an unusual event on the close grounds, they are common all yr around just not in such numbers in close. there are good reports in the southern states of large fin just as everyone thought the longliners had wiped the bulk out. these are only juvenile fish ive read they dont breed till around 20kg.

I'm thinking of going Friday morn or Saturday lunch time. Around the top of Morton. Has anyone herd of cobia still been caught at Western rocks?

i'll hit it tomorrow myself but i'll be trolling around the sevens!
out to the 36's then down to the catherals/wave rider bouy to get some lactic dolphin fish!
if i was going up hutchies way i would drop lures at the outer bay banks and troll up to hutchies -the way the current is -i would expect hoo hits from midway up !-due north of western rocks! heaps of baby hoo this time of year with this current(hot) and a lill' black could be the early bird!
at hutchies i would break nth to cal wide for some xos dollies!
