Your report sounds very familiar to friends of mine fishing the reefs east of Emu Park over the x-mas weekend. They had plagues of big trevors and bludger taking the slugs and batfish were mixed in with them. I was even told that you could see the lures landing on the back of the fish on the way down. There was also a large number of big pike/baracuda. They also ended up fishing the surface to get their bag of spanish in a matter of minutes. All the spanish were on the smallish side too.
I didn't make it to Rocky till after x-mas and dad only just had a new motor fitted so we didn't get out until the 3rd/Jan. The hot day! Only managed a heap of schoolies and the 3 spanish we caught were all about 720mm.
Nice one Perko!
Most of the reefs up this way were firing over xmas.
Just about everyone got nice trout and the redthroats were in plague proportions.
We never venture far past bustad head for most of our reef fishing, but I'm keen to have a go up your way, the reports are always good, especially on the trout.
Will have to catch up with you one day.
Agnes Jack, we had a big day planned for the bustard areas but the fuel pump packed it in on the right hand engine. We were going to troll livies for spaniards then head out to a few marks I have called bustard south. Seem to have best success at spots that we pick up on the sounder on the move rather than right on top of the common reefs. I need a few lessons from you on landing the bigger trout. We got dusted up alot on the baitrunners, and a few times on the tld's. We are using 25lb mono on the baitrunners and 30 - 50 lb braid on the bottom bashers. What tackle you using on them? Planning to target some reds next time. What depth do most people get good reds, and are they inside the islands or outside. Tony Perkins.
Perko
It's all those little patches that you find in the middle of nowhere that hold the best quality fish. Most of the major reefs cop a fair hammering around here, the little ones are hardly touched.
For those bigger trout 30-50lb gear is essential, or they get you in the reef before you even know youv'e had a hit.
At this time of year a lot of reds come in off the closer grounds, we usually get some nice ones very close in Places like the outerwides have some good red marks just out from the edges. The outer side of the main reefs are probably more consistant, but we only ever fish in close, no need to spend a fortune on fuel. We usually do better or at least as well as the fellas going out wide, at a quarter of the cost and less than quarter of the travelling time.
We will have to get together one of these days and compare notes!
