Sean i was over at mud early this morning and had fun catching and releasing mackerel......They were hammering our soft plastics and we lost quite a few before landing the odd one or three.
Headed over to the 4 beacons mid morning but had no luck drifting there so back over to Wello where we bagged a few 39cm squire on 4" zooms just on the high tide.
Big tide today made fishing tough with the plastics but what a top day to be out on the bay.
Conditions were excelent.
Cheers Brent
Whiptails are actually a bait species although can be eaten if desperate. They only grow to max 30cm but make a decent live bait for pelagics or strip for bottom species. Easily caught on jigs when located as they school (lots around curtain and hole in the wall. If you try one, tell me what you think.
Whiptails are pretty good bait. Personally, I couldn't be bothered filleting them for eating, but they are excellent eating if you want to give it a go.
I found this out on a charter I was one one time (a work related junket ). We were on a 72 foot timber cruiser that had a professional chef as part of the crew. We were catching hundreds of whiptails so the crew filleted them and the chef did them up in a mild chilly breadcrumb mix and we were eating them as fast as we were catching them - a hard job but someone had to do it . They were absolutely great eating, but a lot of effort for the tiny fillets.
how long will the mackeral and tune be in the bay for?
hope the weather dies down so i can take my 15ft tinny out to moreton's beacons again for a session with slugs
