    Pinkenba

all new to fishing and eager to find a decent spot I prepared for an early morning start to head to the sunken wall.

Up at 5am.... boy child compaining about why anyone would be up at such an ungodly hour.... dog hearing a commotion decided to complain also about not being let in....

got everything ready.... and having woken up the entire household (as well as half the street thanks to dog)... I am off....

    directions are fine....

find bait shop on Kirra street.... buy bait.... next the rest of the destructions...

private road with pipeline on the left... check

follow until the end where it veers right.....check

gate for fishermen... hmm.. its a boomgate.. guess that's a gate.. check.

ahh, security guard,,,chasing me off the property guess not.

driving around for another private road does not meet with success. Back to the bait shop.

park car just down from the boat ramp..... ahhhhhh water!!!

ok, this will do..... wet the line

    every cast a bite.... literally.....

after 3 hours..... 7 whiting, 4 bream and one other later identified to be tailor. All went back in the drink as illegal (or barely legal).

a fabulous day terrible TERRIBLE winds....blowing a lot of my casts straight back at my feet... luckily that's where the fish were

no dinner..... no tackle lost..... lots of fun...and only partly drowned thanks to Tangalooma ferry

will definitely go back there...maybe next time wont take the wind along

P.S. a bloke who was also fishing told me that the sunken wall directions are a no go the days.... only way to get there is on foot at low tide....

    Re: Pinkenba

Hey wormy... Ive caught bucket loads of whiting there one day (At least very near to to there). Also some monster flatties have come out of there on the end of a mates line when we were out in his boat.

Gets a bit of a hammering from waves from the big ships though... Theres actually a nice place a little further along in Myrtleton (?Spelling?) ive been to a few times. Lots of bites, mangroves, sand banks, drop offs etc. Am planning on heading back down there soon to throw some SP's around for flatties/bream.

If you wanna come along for a fish, give me a hoy via PM, and we'll see what we can do. Thinking about Thursday night maybe...

    Re: Pinkenba

mate ive been reading your posts and im glad to hear u that u have been persisting with it and come up with some fish [smiley=2thumbsup.gif] even they werent legals at least u caught a fair few and to be honest ive fished at Pinkenba once before and caught nothing... what bait were u using? were u fishing near the boat ramp? when i went i had herring and mullet that had previously been frozen about 3 times after 3 uses, strongly suspect this was a factor in my failure but im keen to learn more about local fishing spots around brissie as i am land based and rely on coaxing mates to come fishing( so they can drive there )

    Re: Pinkenba

    hi Nemo....

I went up from the boat ramp about 20 or 30 metres... closer to whatever that industrial thingie is. just drove up over the grass (everyone else was doing it). wanted to go further up but the wind was so blowy that when I found sheltered spot between two mangroves, that was the place to be

I bought some fresh worms at the bait shop... expensive suckers and all i did was fishfeed on them.

I had some frozen prawns with me..... formerly fresh but iffy then froze them anyway. and when that ran out bought another lot of frozen prawns at the shop...and for ones they were of decent size without the need of tweezers to get them onto the hook.

I too am always on the look out for local fishing spots.

I am in an area that doesnt even possess a bait shop!!! sheesh.

Pinkenba takes me about 30mins (thanks to the inner city bypass). I'll be back!

    Re: Pinkenba

ewww-worms - I'm sure someone wiser on here can fine tune this advice (Or correct the mistakes ), but maybe give this a go:-

For whiting use a light "flicky" rod, and about 6lb or 4lb line. 6lb would be better incase you hook onto a bream or flathead. Just use a small ball or bean sinker running all the way to the hook. The lighter the sinker, the better - Just enough weight to get the bait onto the bottom. If the current is moving a bit, then go for a slightly bigger sinker. Use a small, long shanked hook.

Cut up the blood worms (watch out for their nippers at the ends) into small pieces about 2-3cm long, and thread onto the hook. Cast out, and if the whiting are there, they will be onto it very quickly!

For the size of the fish, whiting fight really well, and on light gear and a loose drag, they are awesome fun! (Plus taste FANTASTIC!!!)

Best of luck with getting onto the big tasty buggers!

    Re: Pinkenba

    Good advice Dan.

Worms, a couple of things I may add would be with the prawns, peel them first. Even though they are raw, they peel pretty easy. A lot of bread and butter fish like a soft bait. Just leave the tail on.

With weight, lighter is always better. But having said that, when you are new, it can be difficult to know if you are actually on the bottom. If in doubht, I would say go heavier rather than lighter as you will catch nothing if you are not in the range.

But by the sound of it, you have done pretty well doing what you are already doing so if it aint broken then don't fix it.

Nemo, would you eat prawns that have been frozen and thawed 3 times?? No?? THEN WHY WOULD A FISH!! If it is not fresh then you are not in the game.

With drag, I go pretty light. Don't be worried if a fish takes line off you. They will do little runs and then stop. This is when you get some back. Is really exciting when you have fish taking line off and the reel is zinging. If it is set too tight then you can loose fish by pulling the hook out of their mouth.

I go fishing with my 7 year old. You are lucky to get that quality time with your boy. Keep the passion.

    Re: Pinkenba

nice....keep having fun until it gets serious...

have been there myself and found that it bit well...., save for the ferry, the container ships and the low tide. How I remember I was dropped off there one day when I was young, again it fished well, and then the tide went out like a tsunami - no mobile phone at that age!! I spent a couple of hours watching fiddler crabs do their dance.

i knew that my three times frozen prawns were unlikely to do well but it was more of a spur of the moment fishin trip and i just thought id try with what i had, it was a lovely day anyway, does anyway know if castnetting works well around there? cos im a big fan of livebaiting...

    Re: Pinkenba

is it safe to eat the fish in that area these days?
how far would up the river would it be safe to eat the fish and which types?

    Cheers mate

    Re: Pinkenba

I personally wouldn't eat bream out of the river, especially from around luggage point. However, things like whiting normally spend most of their time in the bay, so they should be alright.
