    sunday off sth passage

Bugman invited me along for a trip on the bogey today, his mrs Leanne caught a nice yellowfin, we tried hard for marlin all day but it just wasnt to be. 3 tuna species, mack/yellowfin/skipjack and dolphinfish being the end tally, enjoyable day on the water, fair swell running but wind was bugger all, thanks again Brett.

    Rob,

Seemed to be the general theme around our way yesterday. Went north to try something different. Took a hit early just outside the bar but it spat the hooks before I could get the rod out of the holder. And that was it for us in the marlin stakes. Picked up some tuna but all in all pretty sad.

Listened in to the Moreton Bay Billfish Challenge - seemed to be getting a few up at the cape. We turned back before we got that far. Coming back into the bar we saw 2 freejumpers - we both burst into tears.

Was wondering why there were so many marlin boats up around the cape. Tried to call you guys on VHF Rob, don't know if you received. Nice sized fin there eh.

We crossed south passage around 5:30 ....found a few bait balls within a few km's north and worked them for over an hour for no results .
Then started trolling north and came across a few bait balls in 20 - 25 m of water on the spawn lines sporatically ...still nothing .
We didn't get a hit till we got to shallow tempest .
We made about 20 runs around the tempest for a half dozen macks and stripies ...and lost a couple of uzi's to the toothy critters , yet when we put the hex heads out on the wire and gave it a bit of speed ...nothing wanted to come to the party !

went all the way to the cape where we found some yellowfin...some good tucker atleast .

got a run off something half decent that went deep about 1km wide of the cape ....but hooks didn't set .

All in all was a good weekend with over 500 km of wate covered ....just no billy

There were a few hook ups on the comp, but there was quite a few zero tallies too .

    Thems the breaks !

Outsider and I planned to get out Saturday afternoon and sleep inside Straddie to get an early sunday morning in but we went alittle further and before we knew it we crossed a very shabby bar and headed for a fish off Point lookout with only less then an hour of day light left (we were Keen) There was bait everywhere and birds to suit but only skipjack tuna to be caught before we headed back to the bar just before dark which turned out to be an interesting ride.

Sunday-What a day but the marlin were few and far between. Just after 6am the first billy hit in 60mtrs of water and as Outsider said it spat the hooks. We thought things were looking good but how wrong we were.

Billo i think you may have been trolling on the inside of us in about 20-30mtrs of water while we headed up to the cape.?

To see 2 free jumpers outside the bar was enough to make us cry but thats fishing.

By what we heard on the vhf it sounded like MichealG found a good bite and had 3 or 4 hook ups on billys in the one spot but pulled the hooks on all. BUGGER

    Cheers Greg

The billys weren't really playing the game this weekend. On saturday out of mooloolaba we went 1 from 4, then on sunday went heavy tackle off the goldie and got none from 4! It seems to be the same story all round.

    Good Job,
Must have headed out just after you as i noticed Buggmans boat had gone. Didnt get to go out in the blue as Ray called it off due to the swell , i did head out the passage for a look and although the boat would have handled it i dont know the bar to well.
But great day all in all, we should arrange to head out together Mackmauler and Buggman.

Well that all sounds pretty ordinary but they dont bite every day, good run of the usual bycatch so the drags got a workout anyhow.

Billo, I tried you on 77 no response, surf was up on the bar, you did well getting out in a new boat, howd it handle? what gutter did you use?

Michael, line it up with bugman be good to go for a trip with ya,

    cheers Rob

    Michael,

You'll need to get up earlier mate I was meaning to come around Sat night to see if you were heading out but I got a bit busy.

Pity the marlin didn't play the game - I couldn't believe the bait we found late in the day - it was unbelievable that a beakie didn't come off it. If we had stayed longer then we may have been in with a chnace but I was concered at crossing the bar at low tide

Just on that - got a new appreciation for the bar on the weekend. Greened out all the way across - was starting to think we may not have got back in at all at one stage. That god for the local spanner pro who led the way for us.

Did you guys go northern Moreton or southern Amity channel. We gave up on Amity on the way out and followed a boat through northern. We checked both on the way in but there was some very nasty big suckers in the nth so took the lesser of two evils with the southern.

Here's a couple of more pics of bycatch day.

Rob - treating a little yellowfin to the power of the TLD on the fully rollered rig. Overkill ???

I think she's getting the hang of it - although once I did have to hold on to her (just to make sure she didn't fall overboard of course )

    Re: sunday off sth passage

By the way Phil - you'll notice her arms were indeed bent in the first photo holding up the yellowfin - that's because she was flat out lifting the thing off the ground
