    Wello Point S/P 28th

Well I finally have done it, my first franger session. Whilst I have used them on occassions before i have always been quick to jump back to bait. My mate and I headed of Wellington Point around 5.30 on saturday in his tinnie armed with Berkley powerbaits in the watermelon and pumpkinseed. My mate was fishing with Gulp pumpkinseed. Whilst the wind was making it difficult to fish we had an absolute ball.

Whilst nothing we caught was legal (NB we normally don't keep bream unless they are 30cm) there was plenty of action.
Over a 3 hour period we caught 10 grinner, 2 pike, 5 moses perch, 2 bream, 2 wrasse, 20 odd squire to about 33cm and 1 fish that I have no idea what it was. It was around 30cm long and looked in colour like a rosy job fish, however it had a big black eye and its tail was more like a amberjack than a job fish. I must remember to get myself a digital camera. We also had numerous bust offs as well as 2 occassions where we had solid hook ups followed by a powerful runs only to come back with a straightened hook.

At that time Iwas just using the standard squidgee head, as I had lost my few nitros earlier in the day. Can anybody reconmend a jighead that has a stronger hook.

I would like to thank everybody on this site for the information on the use of soft plastics. The knowledge i have gained from you guys and girls is priceless and I can honestly say i am well and truly hooked on soft plastics. I cant wait till my first legal squire on plastics.

    Cheers

    Craig

    Craig,

Mate your on the money with the Nitro Bullets. I use 1/4 oz for the shallow waters like Wello and Peel and up the size to 1/2 oz when fishing deeper waters.

At Wello we have been using between 1/12th and 1/6th TT jigheads. Gama hooks make them a great jighead. Havent had one straighten on a fish out there yet
Try the 3" white gulp, they have got a few fish in the last few weeks for us in the shallower water
The wind was painful on Saturday, it was hard getting a good drift going in the right zone, but there is always next week

Thanks for the information. I only have tried the 3/8 weight so will have to give the lighter ones a go.

Re the Gulps, we had more success with the berkleys powerbaits as we were finding the pumpkinseed gulps were losing their tale on a far more regular basis. I think the presence of the large grinners and pike accounted for most of these. But I am more than keen to try a new type so will give the white 3" gulps ago.

    Cheers

Mate, you just need them to reach the bottom, and 3/8ths could be a overkill in 5mtrs of water. If you cast in front of you whilst drifting, there wont be a problem.
Re the Gulps, the smell attracts fish, but we have found that if there are pike around, the squire arent too far away....becomes expensive losing heaps of tails though.
I have found the 4" watermelon minnows and Saltwater Assassins have been getting good fish lately

4" powerbaits in pumpkinseed been doing the job for me .

I have been using TT 1/16 -1/12 in calm conditions with little current and up to a 1/8 - 1/6 when there is current or wind moving us a bit more ...generally fishing in 4 - 6 m around peel .

if you are after cheaper and stronger jig heads try the squidgey finesse range they have strong vmc hooks. The 3" bass minnows have been catching a few for me in all colours especially, pearl watermelon, blue, bloodworm.

    Cheers
